Huron County still fine-tuning policy for ATVs

The county is still fine-tuning its
proposed bylaw on how best to deal
with All Terrain Vehicles.
Coun. George Robertson (South
Huron) expressed concern with a
plan that will see the county clerk
in charge of collecting fines for ATV
infractions since the trails are on
lower -tier property.
County clerk Larry Adams told
council the policy is being developed
slowly, and that Robertson's ques-
tion is one that will be addressed in
the weeks to come.
He added one of the challenges is
developing a comprehensive ATV
policy since there are no precedents
set.
Coun. John Bezaire (Central
Huron) said developing a policy is a
step in the right direction as he has
learned from personal experience
that ATV clubs are accountable.
Bezaire noted he used to have trou-
ble with ATVers wreaking havoc on
his property.
"Since the stakes went up, I have
not had a single problem," he said.
Under the ombudsman
Thanks to recently passed provin-
cial legislation, the public now has
the right to file complaints about
what are suspected to be improperly
held in -camera meetings which are
called such because they are closed
to the public and media.
As it stands, lower -tier govern-
ments can opt to hire their own

investigator, join an association and
share the costs of retaining an
investigator or allow the provincial
ombudsman to handle complaints,
free of charge.
Council's committee -of -the -whole
defeated a motion that would've
seen an independent investigator
hired, meaning the ombudsman will
be entrusted with the responsibility.
Plan's OK
Council gave the nod to a Huron
East -based plan that will see the
former Seaforth Public School
demolished in order to make way
for a housing development.
"It looks like a very nice plan,
actually," said Warden Deb
Shewfelt.
