The fact that Seaforth Public
School has made great strides in lit-
eracy skills during the past few
years was obvious to the school's
new principal Cheryl Peach when
she joined the staff in November.
"It's so evident when you talk to
the students. They have the ability
to speak it. When you ask what
strategies they find helpful, they
can tell you," she says.
Seaforth Public School was sin-
gled out by the province for partici-
pation in a specially -funded three-
year "Turnaround" program, which
helped improve the school's stan-
dardized test results.
Former SPS principal Kim Black
recently took on a board -wide pilot
project similar to Turnaround that

Peach says
SPS will contin-
ue to build on the
success of the
Turnaround pro-
ject.
"Education is
about life-long
learning and
there will always
be a path to fol-
low. There's
always growth
happening," she
says.
"There is

says
Peach.
The new principal says she
received a warm welcome at SPS, a
school she says is known for hugs
from students.
"Students are proud of Seaforth
Public School and state it is the best
school ever. What a wonderful mes-
sage to hear from our students," -she
says.
And, she says that arriving in
November just before report card
time was a good way to learn quick-
ly about the school.
"I've been in meetings with kids
and their parents already," she says.

Acknowledging the work that's
already been done on bully preven-
tion at SPS, Peach says that focus
will also continue.
"By stressing the virtues program
and anti -bullying techniques, we're
teaching students how to solve
problems and giving them a comfort
level to be able to report when bul-
lying happens," she says.
Peach says she's also excited by
the school's Peace Garden, which
goes hand in hand with goals of
energy reduction and implementing
the three Rs of reduce, reuse and
recycle.
"This is an area of passion for
me," she says.
She says at her last school in
Wingham, the school focussed on
waste audits of what was going into
blue boxes and what might be- going
into the garbage that could have
been recycled.
"We moved from three boxes of
recyclables to three cartloads. We
think we do recycling but what real-
ly does go into the blue box?" she
says, adding she hopes to eventually
do the same thing at SPS.
