Trophy from 1922 joins mantel at golf club
Fred S. Savauge trophy for women's handicap arrives in Seaforth by Greyhound bus
A surprise addition to the trophies
on the fireplace mantel at the
Seaforth Golf Club arrived recently
by Greyhound bus from Nanaimo,
B.C.
Bob Norris, of the Staffa area, had
received a call from his friend Gerry
Meir in Nanaimo inquiring if there
was still a golf club in Seaforth.
When Bob replied in the affirma-
tive, Meir explained that he had in
his possession a silver trophy that
was originally from the Seaforth
Golf Club. His mother, Mrs. H.G.
Meir (Bessie) had won the trophy in
1937, the last year it was presented
and it had remained in the Meir
family ever since.
Meir wanted to make sure the tro-
phy ended up in a place it would be
displayed and appreciated and the
Seaforth Golf Club placed it on the
mantel alongside many other tro-
phies.
The trophy was donated to the
club in 1922 by Fred S. Savauge
and was presented each year to the
women's handicap (low net) club
champion.
Winners on the Fred S. Savauge
trophy in chronological order are:
1922 Peggy Taggart, 1923 Marg
Brydone, 1924 Mrs. J.P. Mullen,
1925 Dora A. Sills, 1926 Edna
McMurchre, 1927 Ella McKenzie,
1928 Elizabeth McLean, 1929 Lore
McLauchlin, 1930 Ella McKenzie,
1931 Mrs. W. Parks, 1932 Mrs. T.
Swan -Smith, 1933 Mary Stewart,
1934 and 1935 Mrs. H.G. Meir, 1936
Norma Jeffrey and 1937 Mrs. H.G.
Meir.
The trophy was probably retired
when the old golf course closed.
The Fred. S. Savauge Cup has
been placed right beside the
Cresswell trophy, presented to the
men's handicap winner each year
and donated to the original Seaforth
golf club in 1921 by Ralph
Cresswell.
The Cresswell trophy was donated
by Frank Sills when the Doig family
opened the present Seaforth Golf

with the Fred S. Savauge trophy that recently joined the Seaforth
trophies on the club mantel.
