"If the ratio is under 100, the
number of deaths was lower than
what was expected, and if the ratio
is over 100, there were more deaths
than expected,"the said.
The HPHA ratio is 90.
"But that doesn't mean we can sit
on our laurels. We have to continue
to work on improving patient safety
across the board," Williams said,
adding the HSMR study is just "one
tool" that the Alliance will be using
as it continues the ongoing process
of improving the services it offers.
A further break down of the
HSMR ratios was not available for
the four individual Alliance hospi-
tals — Stratford, St. Marys, Clinton
and Seaforth.

HPHA chief executive officer
Andrew Williams announced the
local results at the Clinton Local
Advisory Committee (LAC) meeting
on Dec. 5 and the Alliance board
meeting on Dec. 6.
Because its number of qualifying
cases was just 2,350 — below the
2,500 cases required to make the
the numbers valid — the HPHA was
not included in the report.
Regardless, Williams said the
local results will be posted on the
HPHA website (www.hpha.ca) in
the near future.

"Some smaller hospitals don't
even have cases that qualify. We
only have an Alliance -level ratio,
because the numbers wouldn't be
statistically significant for the indi-
vidual hospitals," Williams said.
First used in the United Kingdom,
the HSMR measuring process was
adapted by the CIHI for use in
Canada at the request of hospitals
and patient safety experts.
The published report, released on
Nov 29, features results for 85 larg-
er acute care facilities and 42 health
regions across the country, exclud-
ing Quebec.
Results from Quebec hospitals
were not available due to historical
differences in data collection.
