Mozambique
trip changes
Christmas
for the
Whitmores
Susan Hundertmark
iiNEENEED
Because of a life -changing trip to
Mozambique in the fall, Bruce
Whitmore and his family are
looking at Christmas a little
differently this year.
He and his wife Margaret, of
McKillop, have decided to "spoil
the grandchildren and ourselves a
lot less" so that, together, his
extended family can send $1,000
to create a garden to feed hungry
kids in a country ravaged by war
and natural disasters.
"I raised the idea of $1,000 to
(his daughter and partner lay
minister) Melissa (Snyders) and
she said, `That's easy' and they all
threw in $150. They jumped right
on it," he says.
The retired teacher and lay
minister for the United Church is
also travelling throughout the
Huron -Perth Presbytery speaking
about his trip as he prepares to
lead a group back to Mozambique
next August.
His Christmas letter to friends
and family also asks for donations
towards seeds, farm implements
and gardens in Mozambique
through London Conference of the
United Church.
"The churches over there most of
all want help to feed their orphans
