MacLellan unsettled by news of county landfill plan
Cheryl Heath
GINGURISSIZEMIIM
Coun. Bernie MacLellan (Huron East) is curi-
ous to know why Huron East is being considered
in a plan that will see it cease to use the Mid -
Huron landfill two years earlier than any other
municipality.
MacLellan said the news was especially unset-
tling given it is the first he's heard of it.
County planning director Scott Tousaw said
the idea is a draft proposal only and that elected
officials had yet to be consulted.
Some councillors were also surprised to learn
that neither Huron East council nor its staff had
been contacted for input.
"I think the cart got before the horse here,"
said Tousaw.
Warden Deb Shewfelt said it is difficult to com-
ment on the situation without knowing all the
facts.

"We can make it an issue or we can resolve it
at the landfill board," added Shewfelt.
Banning smoking in cars carrying children
unlikely in Huron
Huron County is not likely to be banning smok-
ing in vehicles that are carrying children any
time soon.
That news was delivered during county coun-
cil's Nov. 28 session, following a question by
Coun. Bill Dowson (Bluewater) who notes the
issue is a hot topic of debate thanks to a recent
law meted out by a Nova Scotian municipality.
"It made a lot of news headlines," said Dowson.
Penny Nelligan, executive director of the
Huron County Health Unit, said such a move is
unlikely given there has been no official direction
to investigate implementing such a bylaw.
That kind of bylaw, noted outgoing Warden
Deb Shewfelt, would be difficult to enforce.
Nonetheless, Coun. John Bezaire (Central

Huron), outgoing chairman of the Health, Social
Services and Ambulances Committee, said,
"never say never."
Defibrillators idiot -proof?
Though the defibrillators being distributed to
arenas throughout the county are being billed as
"idiot proof," training is still recommended.
That news was delivered from ambulance -ser-
vices manager Dave Lew to . council after a ques-
tion about it from Coun. Bernie MacLellan
(Huron East).
"They are fairly easy to use," says Lew, adding
that funding for training is available through. the
Heart and Stroke Foundation and, as such, select
volunteers and staff are being trained how to use
the defibrillators.
Lew added the general rule of thumb is if -you
have the money do the training and if you don't
have the money, do the training anyway.
