SPS fundraising to continue peace garden project
Aaron jack 1 i n
Seaforth Public School is currently
raising money to do work on the
school's peace garden in the spring.
"Right now, over the winter, we're
busy fundraising to raise money to
do the paving," said teacher Nancy
Kale.
Located on the east side of the
school, the peace garden has been in
the works on school grounds for
about a year and a half and on
paper for a number of years.
Kale has been one of the people
organizing the project. Bill Farnell,
a former teacher who retired recent-
ly, was another.
"Right now it consists of an
amphitheatre, which is our outdoor
classroom," said Kale, noting that
has been built from large landscape
rock.
"That went in in the spring, along
with one of the gardens," she said.
They're going to pave the base of
the amphitheatre and create a path
to make it accessible to people in
wheelchairs.
"People can buy a paving stone
and have it engraved for $50," she
said, noting they could engrave the
stone with whoever's name they
like.
One of the campaigns they're
working on now is to sell frozen
food.
"Order forms have gone home with
every family and they take orders

from their friends and family," she
said.
Forms were due this week. The
food - which includes things like
cookie and muffin mixes, hors d'oeu-
vres and the like - is scheduled to be
delivered by Christmas.
Kale said they're also in the
process of a letter campaign to ask
local businesses and organizations
for donations.
"It is such a huge project," she
said. "The peace garden is also
accessible to the community and
involves the community -as well."
The letter -writing campaign was
started by SPS's former principal
Kim Black.
"She set things in motion before
she left," said Kale. "Now we just

need to get those addressed and get
them out." •
Right now the peace garden is
only accessible to intermediate stu-
dents during.recess.
"They use it all the time. They sit
there and talk," she said. "Hopefully
when the garden gets established,
then we can develop curriculum and
use the outdoor classroom and actu-
ally take their classes out there."
At this point, it's not established
enough. They also need some more
shade.
"We've got trees planted, but they
have to grow," she said. "That's all
in the plan. Things will come
together."
