Christmas Bureau open for business this week

While it's not sure of the exact
numbers yet, the Seaforth office of
the Huron Christmas Bureav is
hoping to provide 40-50 families
and about 100 children with new

breast cancer, are being missed by
orphan patients too often.
And, while the well woman's clinic
will not provide a full physical exam
or deal with health concerns unre-
lated to gender, Verberne says it will
provide those tests necessary for the
preventative healthcare of women.
The woman's clinic will also be a
place to have blood pressure taken,
deal with issues of contraceptives,
have pregnancy tests, screen for
sexually transmitted diseases and
discuss health issues surrounding
menopause and hormone replace-
ment therapy.
Verberne will be running the clinic
with Dr. Shepherd available for con-
sultation and referral if necessary.
"I'm not sure what the numbers
are but the clinic is mostly for
orphan patients. But, we have had
requests from women with male
doctors that the portion of the physi-
cal with the pap and the breast
exam happen at the clinic," she
says.
Verberne says that anyone who's
sexually active should be having
pap tests and breast exams once a
year and that any woman over the
age of 50 should be having yearly
mammograms.
She says the well woman's clinic
should be able to see six or seven
patients each week.
"That may not seem like a lot but
for orphans, that's 30 women we
could be seeing within a month," she
says.
Anyone interested in an appoint-
ment should call Dr. Shepherd's
office.

clothes, toys and food after collect-
ing donations all this week.
"We were really busy this morn-
ing with a lot of things coming in.
We're getting a really good response
so far," said organizer Joan Stewart
during the first morning the bureau
was open Monday.
While the five Christmas bureau
locations in Huron County are open
from Dec. 10 to 14 from 10 a.m. to 5
p.m., Stewart says the Seaforth
bureau decided to extend the hours
to 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. to accommo-
date people before and after work.
"We were here at 8:30 a.m. and
we had a few. people in around 9
a.m.," said Stewart.
While she had a hard time judg-
ing Monday morning, Stewart said
she thought that donations of toys,
clothing and food were fairly even
but was still looking for toys, partic-
ularly for children aged two to 12.
As well, she said practical items
such as mittens - especially water-
proof mittens - socks, underwear
and pajamas, are always needed.
"We like to give the practical
things to everyone," she said.
As well, Stewart said the bureau
was attracting plenty of volunteers
of all ages.
"We have lots of volunteers but we
never turn anyone away. We have
some young people coming in after
school to help too," she said.
The Christmas Bureau is open at
Northside United Church until
Friday at 6 p.m.
Distribution of the donations
begins next week.
