Council debates fundraising for new FHT building

having first right of refusal when
the Seaforth development trust
bought its land from them but
McLachlan said no.
McLachlan said he is "fairly confi-
dent" that three tenants have made
the commitment to move into the
FHT building but would not share
any information about who the ten-
ants are.
He said three tenants would gen-
erate $85,770 a year, covering the
operating costs.
As well, he said that if all seven
doctor's suites are full at a rate of
$1,500 a month, the $126,000
should cover the debenture cost on
the -building.
SaiS
"Over the 30 -year period, we will
come within $5,000 of covering the
cost," he said.
"This looks like a win-win situa-
tion if the doctor's suites are all full.
My main concern is can we get
these tenants on board?" said
Seimon.
McLachlan pointed out that there
would be a deficit with a 20 -year
term.
"At one point, we were happily
giving away $50,000 a year (for the
Seaforth medical clinic). It shouldn't
be too much of a problem covering
some of the deficit for the first little
while," said Brussels Coun. David
Blaney.
"Dave's speaking for himself when
saying we happily gave it away,"
this
added Siemon.
MacLellan said the building will
provide Huron East with a "Cadillac
system of healthcare.
"I see no reason why there isn't a
commitment to go ahead with this.
If we can cover the costs, it will pay
for itself," said the deputy -mayor.
"As long as we can put doctors in
there, we can pay the bills," added
Seili.
McLachlan asked if a fundraising
committee would be set up and
MacLellan agreed that he would be
"100 per cent in favour of the com-
munity getting together for
fundraising."
"We'd better start it before we get
the roof on," he said.
But, Blaney asked if the munici-

pality is taking money away from
the hospital by fundraising.
And, Fisher said he didn't think
fundraising should be done for a
healthcare facility.
"I'm not keen on fundraising for
public healthcare and I'd like a
recorded vote if it comes to that," he
said.
MacLellan responded that he
thinks some members of the com-
munity have already put money
aside for the building.
"We need to do some sort of drive,
whatever we get out of it," he said.
"You'll find that some people will
want to do something because the
building is for the betterment of the
community."
