While he got involved in coaching
because his kids are playing hockey
and soccer, John Taylor says he'll
likely still be coaching long after his
kids are grown.
"It's been great and I'll likely have
even more time when my kids grow
up. I'd like to continue it," says this
year's winner of the Seaforth
Citizenship Awards' Service to
Sports award.
Taylor, who's played hockey him-
self since he was seven and been on
the bench as trainer or coach since
his son Owen, 12, started playing
hockey at age five, also looks after
the Saturday morning houseleague
hockey in Seaforth.
"I enjoy the hockey atmosphere,"
he says.
Watching his nine-year-old daugh-
ter Cora play houseleague, Taylor is
happy to be able to contribute to the
fun of the game.
"You want to make sure every-
one's on a team and make the teams
as fair as possible. That's where the
fun is - the kids having a good
time," he says.
During last
year's house -
league playoffs,
Taylor tried to
add a bit of
excitement by
having the play-
ers introduced as
they took the ice,
playing music in
between plays
and substituting
penalty shots for
sitting in the
penalty box.
"The kids like
it, the goalies
like it - it's some-
thing different,"
he says.
At the more
competitive
league, Taylor
says the fun
becomes more a
matter of work-
ing hard to

"At this level," he says of the pee-
wee rep team he's coaching this
year, "they understand the game
better and you can introduce some-
thing new and see them do it on the
ice."
As a coach, Taylor thinks the key
is being in control of yourself and
not letting the situation get the best
of you.
"You need to be calm - explain but
don't be a yeller or a screamer," he
says, adding that whiteboards are
valuable tools to explain various
plays.
"You like to win sometime over
the course of a season but overall,
you have the responsibility to bring
up the kids' skill levels. Then, you
hope the winning will take care of

the puck during a
recent practice of the Seaforth peewee rep
itself," he says.
During soccer season, Taylor is
also excited to see kids who show up
ready to play.
"We had one phenomenal year in
soccer two years ago when we won
everything. They were all very ath-
letic and strong soccer players but
they were also coachable and that
goes a longer way than ability," he
says.
The nomination form for Taylor
praises his dedication to "sports in
general and his "commitment to the
kid."
"John gives countless hours to
practices and games. In the summer
he worked • on soccer and doesn't
even get the runners off and he's
eager to put on the skates," says the
nomination.
