CHSS junior girls' claim
bronze at WOSSAA
Redmen beat Blue Devils for third
Jennifer Hubbard
It was a colourful match up as
the CHSS Redmen faced the
Mitchell Blue Devils in the WOS-
SAA junior girls' basketball
bronze medal game last week.
Unfazed by a loss to the top-
ranked Holy Cross team, of
Strathroy, earlier in the day, the
local squad maintained an early
lead to claim third place in the
Western Ontario Secondary School
Athletic Association (WOSSAA) 'A'
division.
CHSS was one of four schools to
make the trip to St. Marys
District Collegiate and Vocational
Institute (DCVI) last Wednesday.
The Nov. 14 win against
Mitchell, was CHSS's first against
the school this season.
"We've played Mitchell three
times this season and every game
was a close one, so we knew we
had a chance," coach Wes Morley
commented.
Clinton built a small lead in the
first half and ended the first half
just one point ahead.
Enthusiastic, the Redmen gave
up their lead briefly in the third
quarter, but came back in the
final frame for an eight -point vic-
tory at 42-34.
"They took the lead and held
onto it until the end, something

they didn't do in our previous
games against Mitchell," Morley
said.
"They're a pretty tough group.
They played hard, didn't give up
and they persevered."
The Redmen qualified for WOS-
SAA as the second place 'A' team
in Huron -Perth. Mitchell earned a
first -place ranking team after a
35-28 win against CHSS in the
Huron -Perth semi-finals on Nov.
7.
"It's been a learning experi-
ence," Morley said of the team's
2007 season.
"For most of the girls it was
their first year playing high
school basketball."
The junior team is made up of
Grade 9 and 10 students.
And while the squad will be los-
ing some of its experience as play-
ers move up to the senior level,
Morley was optimistic about next
year.
"I think we'll have an even bet-
ter team next year. We have some
good kids coming up from .et* 8
and our returning playiii's''are
strong," he added.
The St. Anne's junior team also
competed in the Huron -Perth
championships earlier this month.
The Eagles lost two hard fought
games — 27-25 against St. Mike's
and 39-38 against South Huron in
overtime.

Coach's comments:
The action in both
games this weekend
was definitely at the
opposition's end. Our
girls had many shots
on net and both games
could have resulted in
a much higher score
for Seaforth had it not
been for great goal-
tending by Ridgetown
and BAD. Heidi
didn't have many
shots taken on her due
to the strong defensive
work of Tab, Marissa,
Jordan and Kourtney.
