Biodiesel creates new market for soybeans
From Page 11
Those returns would come in the
form` of jobs and "spin-off benefits t,f
sales."
Dr. Newkirk said the economics
aren't favourable at the moment
because oil (from oilseed) prices
have gone up so dramatically in
recent months that it wouldn't be
profitable, even with government
incentives, to sell biodiesel made
from that oil commercially. That
may change as Canadian production

He said the idea of biodiesel is
that it creates a new "level for the
seed, a new price point that you
really can't go below."
Giving canola as an example, Dr.
Newkirk said they used to only have
one market - the food sector.
"If there was ever an over -supply,
the price plummetted," he said.
By adding another market, it's
less likely that there will be too
much and also less likely the price
will drop drastically.
"That's the plan," he said. "We'll
see how that works in reality."
He said that a community level
project would involve a five to ten
million litre per year plant at an
investment of about $1 million.
"That would be a community like
Seaforth," he said.
Nick Whyte, past president of the
Huron County Federation .of
Agriculture, was one of the farmers
at the workshop. He farms in
Hullett Township.
"With energy prices rising, I'm
looking for ways to make or save
money," he said.
He found the workshop interest-
ing, but isn't sure about the econom-
ics yet.
"But when oil is approaching US
$100 per barrel, things that did not
used to be viable become viable by
comparison," he said.
Because of that, Whyte said that
he's interested in all kinds of renew-
able energy sources.
"This is part of it," he said.
"Soybeans and canola are renew-
able, where oil and natural gas
aren't."
