"The ramps were put in years ago. We just needed the push but- tons to make the doors accessible so the trust stepped up to the plate and did it," says Steffler, adding the door openers cost $4,000 to install. Steffler says the impetus for the installation of the door openers was a letter to Seaforth council from Dan McGrath, whose nine-year-old son Ross is in a wheelchair. "A lot of people might be staying at home because they don't realize they can get into the post office," says Steffler. com- McGrath sent the letter to Huron East council three months ago and says he's glad to see the automatic door openers installed. "Someday I'll be asking Ross if he wants to go downtown and get the mail and now he can," he says, adding that there are many others in town, in wheelchairs, scooters and pushing baby strollers who will also benefit from the move. McGrath also asked council to install automatic door openers at the Seaforth arena as well as creating a platform where those in wheelchairs are high enough to view the action on the ice. He says that while special arrangements have been made for his son during special events at the arena, it would create real accessi- jbility to have a permanent spot for those who need help seeing the ice. `Municipalities need an accessibility budget to do a few small projects every years,' -- Dan McGrath, of Seaforth "Right now, -the grammas and grandpas in their scooters can't get into the arena or see past the boards when they get inside," he says. "We've got a nice arena but how do you get in the door with a wheelchair?" iota tire invitcc( to at -tenet -hese ar<a chitrcfi ST. McGrath is also asking for better handicapped parking spots on Seaforth's Main Street. "I realize this is not going to get done overnight but look at who's living here," he says, pointing to the large seniors' population in Seaforth and area. McGrath says he'd like to see the mayors 'and reeves of Huron County take on the challenge of getting into a wheelchair and discovering how accessible the towns of Huron are themselves. "Municipalities need an accessiblity budget to do a few small projects every year," he says. Story idea? Call Susan or Aaron at 519-527-0240 Opinion Seaforth's and Mitchell's unsolved mysteries would drive me crazy From Page 4 I have to admit I still don't fully get the point, though I'm open to finding out. To find out what would happen in Seaforth if a fire call came in at 1 p.m. on a Saturday, I called Huron East fire chief Marty Bedard. His answer was comforting. "All the guys have pagers," he' said. "When the tones go off, the dispatcher announces whether it's a pager test only, or a call." Bedard said there's a radio at the fire hall that links to a radio at the hospital, where calls are dispatched from. "When they use their radio, it broadcasts out on our pagers," he said. Bedard said that if firefighters were down- town and didn't have their pagers on when the tone sounded on a Saturday at 1 p.m., they'd just assume it was the regular test - "until they saw the cars go fly- ing by." He also said that before they used pagers - which was before his time - it would have been possible to 'miss a call at that time because they just used the siren. Yes, I probably could have found out the answers to these ques- tions by asking coworkers back in my first couple weeks here. That wouldn't have been any fun though. I kind of liked being baf- fled by these things I assumed everyone knew. But I know I'd lie awake wondering for years to come if Y didn't find out while I have the - chance. A little uncertainty about things that don't impact my life very much is a wonderful thing, but unsolved mysteries would drive me crazy. SEED Discount Programs On Now!
