Councillors say they won't have problem with complaints about closed meetings

Seaforth Coun. Joe Steffler said
he sees the $300 retainer as a "very
good insurance policy."
"We're going to get some sharp
lawyers grab onto a gray area and
we're going to see a lot more chal-
lenges," he said.
But, MacLellan disagreed,that
paying a $300 retainer will provide
any sort of insurance for Huron
East.
"That $300 is no defence of
whether you are right or wrong. All
he does is decide whether we did or
did not make a mistake. And, why
pay someone when you don't have a
problem?" he said.
McLachlan said Huron East has
never been challenged about its
closed meetings before but that the
legislation never gave a method of
challenging them before, except
through the courts.
Siemon said that since the inves-
tigator will charge $75 an hour plus
expenses, the costs could grow
quickly.
"A bunch of frivolous complaints
are going to add up," he said.
Grey Coun. Alvin McLellan
argued that since each case would
have to be judged on its merits,
Huron East would be just as well off
Woman charged
with theft
A 70 -year-old Huron East woman
was caught shoplifting close to $200
in merchandise from the Shoppers
Drug Mart in Exeter on Nov. 11 at
approximately 4:30 p.m.
Police and staff investigated the
incident and the woman was
charged with one count of theft
under $5,000.
She is scheduled to appear in
court in Exeter on Jan. 24.

the Municipal Act.
McLachlan warned that council is
going to have to make sure it closely

"If you're going into committee of
the whole for any purpose, you're
only allowed to discuss that and
nothing else and you better go in for
the right reason. And, you've got to
be careful what happens when ,you
get into committee of the whole, he
said.
Closed meetings are allowed
under the Municipal Act if the sub-
ject matter involves security of the
property of the municipality, per-
sonal matters about an identifiable
individual, a proposed or pending
acquisition or disposition of land,
labour relations, litigation or poten-
tial litigation and advice subject to
solicitor -client privilege.
