In France, they visited the beaches of Normandy, Courselles-sur-Mer's Juno Beach Centre, the Caen Peace Memorial Museum, Dieppe, Etaples, Menin Gates in Ypres and Vimy Ridge, where they partici- pated in the 90th anniver- sary ceremonies. "The kids got it. They came back more knowl- edgeable and understood it. They have seen it and felt it. You can't stand at Vimy Ridge and not feel the presence of people who laid down their lives for their country," McLennan says. The group toured ceme- teries throughout France, looking for the graves of the veterans they had researched and often just standing in front of ran- dom graves, thanking whomever was buried there for their sacrifice. McLennan's tribute to Papple was to stand at his grave and sing "Oh, Danny Boy" as her stu- dents listened, some of them weeping. "It was a beautiful sunny day and I was going to do this. I thought that if the birds could sing, I could too," she says. While she didn't know about Papple and the fact that he died at Normandy before her trip, McLennan says that knowledge will be added to her repertoire of stories when she teach- es about the Second World War every year. "When I teach about Juno Beach on D -Day, I'll talk about Robert Papple. Olave's brother will never truly be dead as long as I'm teaching," says McLennan.
