CAS deal approved,
but layoffs still loom
Dona O'Connor
The Huron Perth Children's Aid
Society board and employees repre-
sented by Local 1427 of the
Canadian Union of Public
Employees (CUPE) have ratified a
collective agreement, but executive
director Tom Knight said the agency
will have to' lay off some workers as
a result.
"We do anticipate there will be
some level of layoffs," he said,
adding that this was discussed with
union negotiators and the union is
well aware of it.
Knight said the child protection
agency will attempt to handle the
layoffs with as little disruption to
staff as possible through such mea-
sures as attrition and gapping.
The agency is "way over budget,"
he said, and has to reduce staff to
meet the demands of the agreement.
Laurel LeBeau, president of the
union local, said the agency took
come concessions off the table and
that went a long way towards the
agreement.
After-hours workloads were
addressed and front-line workers
gained as well in reducing differen-
tials between themselves and front-
line workers elsewhere. Both were
key issues in negotiations.
The across-the-board pay raise
under the agreement is three per
cent hut for some administrative
employees and front-line workers
it's a bit higher.
About 90 workers are covered by
the agreement.
