Original Golden Bears gather for first huddle in more than 50 years
Aaron Jacklin
More than 55 years have passed
since Evelyn McPhee was a cheer-
leader at the Seaforh high school and
the school football team won the
championships, but she still remem-
bers the cheer.
"Boom -chick -a -boom, boom -chick -a -
boom, boom -chick -a -boom -chick -a -
boom -boom," she recited with a laugh.
McPhee and a number of former
Seaforth high school students gath-
ered at the Seaforth Legion on
Saturday • to remember the '51 cham-
pionships and look over newspaper
clippings and memorabilia from back
then.
The reunion. was n a.rminded by
Gar and Carol Baker and Irwin
Johnston. Gar and Johnston were on
the team, Carol was a cheerleader
and they all still live in the Seaforth
area.
McPhee now lives in Michigan and
said the chance to get together with
everyone was thrilling.
"It really takes you back in time,"
she said.
Harry Jacobi summers in
Kincardine and -spends winters in
Arizona these days, but in 1951 was
quarterback on the team and lived on
a farm out toward Hensall.
"It was called rugby back then, but
it's become known as football," he
said.
Jacobi still remembers his first
game against St. Marys when he was
in Grade 10.
"I was the backup quarterback and
had all the plays written on my arm,"
he said. "Unfortunately, it rained that
day and my plays got washed off."
He couldn't remember a single play
and prayed they wouldn't send him in
to play.
"They finally sent me in toward the
end of the game when we were losing
badly. I got through it somehow," he
said.
It may not have been a great start,
but he improved. He and another
player named Ron Rennie were sent
in to play during a game the following
year after the team suffered a string

of losses.
"We won that game and
never lost a game after that
for two years," said Jacobi.
That's when they won the
1951 WOSSA B champi-
onship.
"This is great," he said,
referring to the reunion. "I
never would have thought
this would happen."
Ron Rennie was also at
Saturday's reunion. He was
fullback and kicker on the
'51 team. He was delighted
to see his old friends.
"It's amazing," he said,
noting that while he sees
Gar Baker every so often,
he hasn't seen Jacobi or
Gerry Dressel - another
player who was there on
Saturday - for more than
50 years.
He marvelled at how
while Seaforth hadn't been
winning for a long time,
everything just "gelled"
that year and they started
winning. Rennie said their
coach, Archie Dobson, was
as surprised as anybody.
Gerry Dressel played on
the line that year and
remembers the time fondly.
"It was a fabulous experi-

ence," he said, noting the
football team was the high-
light.
He said the championship
game itself was a chal-
lenge.
"It was the toughest game
I've ever been involved in,"
he said. "It's hard to
describe, but we really had
to work hard. The other
team was a really tough
team, so we had to go all-
out. We couldn't relax."
Dressel's favourite thing
about playing was the
camaraderie the team
shared.
"It was kind of nice to win
too, you know," he said.
