Mitchell Hawks take to ice with sizeable Huron East contingent
Aaron Jacklin
Eight of the 22 young
men playing hockey for
the Jr. D Mitchell Hawks
this season are from the
Seaforth area.
Like many players on
the team overall, many of
the Seaforth area players
are rookies, says Hawks
coach Kory Dietz.
"They've all fit in well
and they're all experienced
hockey players," says
Dietz, noting that it'll take
some time to gain experi-
ence at this level.
With four wins and eight
losses to date, the Hawks
are still finding their
stride. The team is in a
rebuilding phase after
having won the league last
year. Dietz says it's a
tough league and a team
needs a lot of veteran
players to win.
"With the guys we have,
we stand an opportunity
to challenge for the league
again," he says.
Coach Dietz says Mike
Dietz, from outside of
Winthrop, is one of three
young goalies on the team.
While the coach and goalie
share a last name, they're
not related.
"Mike's playing better
every week," says Kory.
"He's had a decent start.
He's maturing and gaining
experience at the same
time. It's a big step out of
midget hockey."
Dietz has three wins,
three losses and a
respectable goals against
average of 3.28. He leads
the team in minutes
played in goal and has one
shutout to his name.
Daryl Hulley, 19, of
Seaforth and Tom
Harburn, 19, of Vanastra
play defence.
This is Hulley's first year
with the Hawks after hav-
ing not played any hockey
for the previous year and a
half due to a neck injury
suffered while playing
with a Stratford team.
He has two goals and no
assists in six games
played, but is a University
of Guelph student and has
missed half the games due
to -academic commitments.
"Harburn is currently

out with a separated shoulder," says
Kory.
Harburn suffered the injury in a
game a couple weeks ago and has no
points in nine games.
Ryan, Waterworth, 19, of the
Vanastra area, has no goals and two
assists. Matt Chaput of Egmondville

has three goals and three
assists. Tyler Elligsen,
Andrew Van Vliet and
J.J. Sparling are each
from the Walton area.
Waterworth, Chaput,
Elligsen, Van Vliet and
Sparling are all forwards.
Van Vliet has three assists
and scored his first, and so
far only, goal of the season
in Friday's 7-3 win against
Central Elgin. Sparling
has seven goals and three
assists.
This is Elligsen's fourth
year with the team and
he's tied for top on the
team with five goals and
10 assists. Waterworth
and Harburn are in their
first year with the Hawks
after playing for the juve-
niles in Seaforth last year.
"Chaput, Sparling and Van
Vliet all played AAA midget
last year with the Huron -
Perth Lakers," says Kory.
To give an idea of how
the team is rebuilding, the
coach notes the Hawks
have nine rookie forwards
this season.
"We're young and trying
to gain as much experi-
ence as we can," he says,
noting that they're coming
along well and have
proven they can compete
with every team in the
league they've played.
"We've had some close
games," he said. "We could
easily be at .500 or better,
but breaks and everything
else haven't gone our way
so far. We still have a way
to go."
