Junior curling to start
next week in Seaforth
Men's program to start following
week due to fall deer season
Aaron Jacklin
The Seaforth junior curling pro-
gram will start next week.
"Nov. 7 is our first night," said
coach Diana Steep, noting that
they'll run a registration that
night.
They're hoping for 25 youths,
but are unsure about how many
they'll get this year.
Kim Hill, who manages the
books and handles registration, is
in the process of contacting past
players.
"I'm calling everyone from last
year," she said.
The junior program will run on
Tuesdays and Wednesdays, with
Tuesdays devoted to skill develop-
ment.
"They'll be broken into two
groups: beginners and more expe-
rienced," she said.
Wednesdays will be game
nights.
"They're on teams and it's an
eight -end game," she said, noting
that the length of the game is
intended to build up their
endurance.
Steep said they'll be holding an
elementary school bonspiel on
Nov. 17.
"We did it for the first time last
year and it went fairly well, so
we're going to give it another
shot," she said.
She said that while there are
bonspiels out there for kids, most

are for adults.
"By having our own bonspiel,
maybe we can get more kids
involved," she said.
The curling club is also plan-
ning to send teams from both
Seaforth elementary schools to
the Tim Horton's Timbits
Provincial Championship in
Gananoque in April 2008.
"We have a team going from
each school," said Steep. "At least
one, we're hoping for two, depend-
ing on numbers of course."
While the kids have the curling
club on Tuesdays and
Wednesdays, the adults have it
the other nights.
Curling club president Don
McKercher said that Mondays
will be men's curling and
Thursdays will be mixed. He also
said the men could start on Nov. 5
if people "just want to loosen up."
"That's deer hunting week," he
said. "The guys don't come out
that week anyway so there's no
use getting too serious. The first
serious night will be Nov. 12."
Anyone looking to get in on the
men's curling should contact
Brian McGavin at 519-527-2394.
McKercher said their first draw
has normally been full - 48 people
for the Monday night - the last
few years. However, the overall
trend has been downward.
"We used to have 148 at one
time," he said.

proves successful for Eagles: coach
"Fhis was the one team in partic-
ular that we thought had a shot
making it to OFSAA," St. Anne's
coach Baird Robinson said.
"They've trained hard and consis-
tently all year long and it's the first
full team we've taken (to the
provincials),"
In seventh place Pat Hartman, of
Zurich, was St. Anne's top runner
for the day, leading the midget boys
to their silver finish. Matthew
Steele, of Blyth, followed close
behind in ninth.
The team's "pack" style of run-
ning has proved to be successful,
Robinson explained.
"They pack tightly together when
they're running, leaving the differ-
ence between our first and fourth
runner fairly small, which really
has helped us get the scores we
need to go through."
Both Hartman and Steele will be
competing at the Ontario
Federation of Schools Athletic
Association (OFSAA) meet in
Niagara Falls on Nov 3.
Team members Craig
Thompson, of Clinton, Stephen
Lambert, of Goderich, and Simon
Fernandes, also of Goderich, will be
rounding out the St. Anne's midget
roster.
"We've got quite the cross-section
in terms of representation from
across the county. There's runners
from north, south, east, west and
central Huron, all on one team,
which is nice," Robinson comment-
ed.
At WOSSAA Thompson finished
in 15th place, Lambert was 24th
