Mitchell: farrners, province should pressure feds on RMP
MPP addresses Huron CountyFederation ' of Agriculture at annual meeting
"I don't know what more I can say
or do, but we're going to find out
what we can do to get you to take
up risk managment," she said.
Mitchell said that with the coun-
try heading toward a federal elec-
tion, she'd be doing everything she
could to convince them to get on
board with the risk management
program.

Newly re-elected Huron -Bruce
Liberal MPP Carol Mitchell spoke
to her federal counterparts about
risk management during a brief
speech to the Huron County
Federation of Agriculture at their
annual meeting last Thursday.

Invest in some of the best
companies around the world.
Diversifying your investments could mean
taking advantage of some of the best investment
opportunities around the world. Why go global?
Since Canada makes up only about 4% of the
world economy, it may make sense to open up
your investments to some of the best companies
in today's global markets. As well, diversification
could help you benefit from market upturns
while offering protection during downturns.
So, when thinking about investing globally, consider TD Mutual Funds. It can
make a world of difference.
Let us show you how our global funds can be a part of your investments, or
how you can take advantage of them within the TD Managed Assets Program
(TD MAP) portfolios.

She. said the argument the
Ontario Federation of Agriculture
came to the province with the prob-
lem of risk management, their argu-
ment was they wouldn't be able to
get the federal government to the
table unless the province was will-
ing to be in on it too.
Mitchell addressed the federation
at this point.
"You were right," she said. "You
couldn't. We had to come to the
table. We're there now. The pro-
gram's out. You're filling out appli-
cations."
She said now was the time for the
province and for farmers to work
together to push the federal govern-
ment to the table.
"There is no greater time than
when the antennae are very sensi-
tive, when an election is coming,"
she said.
She wrapped up by saying she
believes Huron -Bruce has more
strengths than challenges and that
we have to turn those challenges
into opportunities.
"We've made headway, but we
have much more work to do," she
said.
Greg McClinchey spoke next on
behalf of MP Paul Steckle.
McClinchey will represent the
Liberals in the Huron -Bruce riding
in the next federal election.
"I'm not going to presume to tell
the people in this room how to do
anything," he said, noting that
there were, combined, hundreds of
years of agriculture expertise there.
"What I will say is that a number
of years ago we had a prime minis-
ter who said, `Think globally, but act
locally.' If there's a message that I'm
going to take from this tonight, it's
the fact that we live in a global.mar-
ketplace," he said, noting that ulti-
mately, it's the farmers of Huron -
Bruce that need to be looked after
first and foremost.
"I support the risk management
program," he said. "I support supply
management."
He said he thinks people need to
ask "deeper questions."
"How do you support supply man-
agement? How would you implement
the risk management strategy?"
He said it's important to the riding
and the industry to ask those ques-
tions.
The meeting also had an election
portion, which saw Stephen
Thompson re-elected as president,
Wayne Black elected as first vice
and Marinus Bakker elected as sec-
ond vice.
