Offering their music as usual on
their annual March Break trip, the
Seaforth and District All -Girls'
Marching Band hopes to return
from the Dominican Republic with
some awareness of social justice
issues.
"It's a different trip than usual,"
says organizer Penny Breen. "We're
trying to bring the band to a new
level of volunteerism."
While the annual trip has always

Breen says the idea of going to a
developoing country for the band's
annual trip came about when one of
the band members adopted aihild
from Africa through World Vision
and couldn't stop talking about how
excited she was about the experi-
ence.
"So, we thought why not mix fun
with real cultural awareness?" she
says. "We got talking about how
lucky kids are in Huron County and
thought why not show them how
other people live."
She adds that band members are
already bringing in their pennies
towards school supplies and new
uniforms for schoolchildren in the
Dominican.
"To go to public school in the
Dominican, children need to buy
$80 uniforms and shoes - and that's
really tough for parents who, if
they're lucky, are working at a
resort for $8 a day. The need there
is huge," she says.
So far, the band members have
raised enough for four school uni-
forms and are gathering school sup-
plies to take with them.
While the band will be staying at
a resort in the
Dominican, per-

The Vanastra Recreation
Centre will continue with its
family Halloween party on
Oct. 27 from 1-4 p.m.
Along with the traditional
haunted house, the party will
include Halloween crafts,
mini putt, ring toss and other
games, a costume contest,
treat bags and an afternoon
swim at a cost of $12 a family.
"It's just about getting fami-
lies out together for some
fun," says Lissa Berard, man-
ager of the Vanastra
Recreation Centre.
She says close to 15-20 fam-
ilies attended last year.
