Huron East council is researching
an alternative method of collecting
and treating sewage in an attempt
to find a cheaper way of providing
sewers in Egmondville.
Clearford Industries Inc. present-
ed a delegation to Huron East's
water and sewer committee Oct. 9
discussing a method that combines
septic tanks and sewer collection,
says Clerk -Administrator Jack
McLachlan.
"It was a method they came across
at the AMO (Association of
Municipalities of Ontario) confer-
ence and it's not a traditional
method," says McLachlan.
Clearford designs and implements
a patented Small Bore Sewer (SBS),
a watertight small diameter waste-
water collection system for commu-
nities who need to create, expand or
upgrade their sewage systems, says
the company's webpage.
"This solution provides waste-
water collection servicing with supe-
rior operational and environmental
performance at a significantly lower
cost when compared to historic
gravity sewers," says Clearford's
webpage. -
In their presentation to the water
and sewer committee, Clearford
cited a price of $14,515 for each of
the 256 Egmondville households,
less than 50 per cent of the histori-
cal gravity sewer costs, estimated at
$30,000 each.
"The proposed system is superior
to the wastewater solutions in the
past since there will be no infiltra-
tion, no by-passing, no unnecessary
treatment of groundwater and no
expansion of the sewage treatment
facility," says the water and sewer
committee minutes.
McLachlan says the committee is
planning to tour the hamlet of
Wardsville in Middlesex County
where an SBS system has been in
operation for approximately five
years.
Egmondville residents attended a
public meeting in April to discuss
whether to pursue a sewage system
in Egmondville or to face more
stringent provincial standards for
septic tanks and agreed to an envi-
ronmental assessement on sewers.
But, McLachlan says the summer
and fall have so far been too dry for
Seaforth, Egmondville water
system ready for design
While they had to approve the
need to apply for another extension
of a certificate of approval for the
Seaforth water system, the Huron
East water and sewer committee
has proceeded far enough to also
give approval to design a water sys-
tem to service Seaforth and
Egmondville.
Richard Anderson, of B.M. Ross
and Associates attended the com-
mittee to outline various alterna-
tives for the source and treatment of
water at the Welsh Street well,
including chlorination with the con-
tact watermain, chlorination with
the reservoir and UV disinfection.
The committee asked that the
design include a building to house
control, monitoring, treatment and
high -lift pumping facilities, standby
power, a control/monitoring and
data collection system, an access
road to the site and electrical ser-
vices.
Clerk -Administrator Jack
McLachlan says two more pump
tests are required before the design,
which should take a few months to
finish, can be finalized.
The municipality is applying to
extend is certificate of approval for
the Seaforth water system until the
end of 2008.

to do the environmental assess-
ment.
"They can't do it until it rains and
they're still hoping to do it this fall,"
says McLachlan.
In April, B.M. Ross and
Associates estimated the cost at
$21,000 per household for sewers in
Egmondville.
