Film facilitates discussion about helping kids
whose families are experiencing cancer, loss

A small but very interested audi-
ence was able to talk about the chal-
lenges of helping children in fami-
lies dealing with cancer during the
recent screening of the award win-
ning documentary "Kids Care" in
Clinton, •says organizer Janis
Bisback.
Huron Hospice Volunteer Service
hosted the event, Oct. 3 with the
support of Huron United Way and
the Central Huron Donation Fund.
Two children, who experienced the
recent deaths of three grandpar-
ents, found the film very pertinent
to their situations.
The film was inspired by a 2001
film "How Can We Love You?" which
profiled two women living with
metastatic breast cancer. Audiences
who saw that film asked director,
Laura Sky to address the needs of
children in families experiencing
cancer.
In Kids Care, the film features a
memorable group of young people,
each of whom is dealing with the
death of a parent, sister, cousin or
best friend. The director of a
Northern Ontario camp used in the
summer for children living with
cancer gathered together a group of
kids who had experienced the death
of a family member ,and they
attended camp for a Wrekend in the
fall of 2004.
One of the film participants,
Jamal Amin was present at the
Clinton screening to talk with the
audience.
His sister died four years ago. He
currently attends the University of
Waterloo.
Adam Misseri,of Oshawa dis-
cussed how his high school devel-
oped a lunch time session for kids at
the school to drop in and talk to a
teacher and other students who
were dealing with cancer and the
death of a family member or best
friend.
This commitment to a safe place
for the students to retreat for a
small part of the day, helped him
greatly, get through the years fol-
lowing the death of his sibling.

Adam Misseri, Jorden Mair, Jessica Ryan
and Jamal Amin talked about the experi-
ence of cancer and loss from a child's
perspective at a recent Huron County
premiere of the film Kids Care, spon-
sored by the Huroa Hospice.
Walkerton and Mildmay to lead the
post screening discussion.
The film was filled with many
moments of laughter along with the
expected times of sadness as the
participants searched to re-estab-
lish "normal" while learning to live
with their loss. It also described
what friends, family and teachers
could do to help kids cope with their
feelings of fear, anger, isolation, and
sadness.
A great deal of conversation
occurred following the film. People
1
wanted to know how they could
reach out to more children in Huron
County following the death of a
family member.
Huron Hospice Volunteer Service
at 519-527-0655 or 519-357-2720,
has copies of the two movies avail-
able for screening for any schools,
families or groups wishing to use
the films.
