Rowena Wallace says source water protection a big issue for agriculture industry
Aaron Jacklin
Rowena Wallace, of Seaforth, was
recently named one of three agricul-
tural representatives on the new
source water protection committee
for the area.
"I'm really excited to be on this
committee," she says. "From what
I've seen, it really looks like a group
of well-informed, well-intentioned
individuals."
Choosing the members of the com-
mittee is the latest step in the
provincial government strategy to
protect drinking water in Ontario.
The plan calls for water to be pro-
tected on a watershed basis where it
enters the water system.
The new committee Wallace sits
on will come up with a plan to pro-
tect the water in the Ausable
Bayfield and Maitland Valley area.
A dairy farmer for 31 years,
Wallace says that source water pro-
tection is a big issue for agriculture.
"It directly affects us with well-
head protection," she says, referring
to the areas around wells that cont-
aminants can enter a water supply
system through.
The protection plans formulated
by the committee could affect farm-
ers' ability to do things like spread
manure and pasture cattle.
Wallace says that while farmers
want to protect water and have as
much of an interest in source water
protection as anybody else, there is
a concern among farmers over who
will foot the bill.

she says, "but we can't afford to
completely carry thecosts that
would be involved in complete well-
head protection."
Wallace says that the purpose of
having the agriculture representa-
tives at the table is to make sure
that society shares equally in the
cost of protecting water sources.
Wallace says- that farmers are
already conscious of their steward-
ship role.
"We do our best to keep everything
under control," she says. "We utilize
our manure properly because it's a
resource to us."
She says it's in a farmer's best
interest to use manure wisely and
they 4o.
"Vetere are regulations coming in
surreimding our ability to spread in
the area round the wellhead, then
that's going to drastically affect
those people in the watershed catch-
ment area that goes into well-
heads."
Limits like this would be costly to
their bottomline.
"In agriculture," she says, "we
don't set our prices for the market-
place, the marketplace tells us what
they're going to pay."
Wallace says this makes agricul-
ture different from other industries
because when their costs go up, they
can't just ask for a price increase to
balance things out.
When asked what. comes next,
Wallace says they'll find out at their
first meeting on Oct. 25.
"It's new to us all at the moment,"
she says.
