Mierlo explained that
at around 6 p.m. on

Disclosure of evidence from
Regier murder trial continues

Jesse Imeson will be spending another
month in custody, as the disclosure of
evidence in the murder trial of Bill and
Helene Regier continues.
Appearing via video link from the
Elgin -Middlesex Detention Centre on
Monday morning, Imeson spoke briefly
with Frank Cameron — who acted as
duty counsel for the Ontario Court of
Justice hearing — over the telephone
privately.
Cameron then told the court that
Imeson had retained Raymond Boggs as
his lawyer, and asked that Imeson be
remanded until early November to allow
for further disclosure of evidence by the
Crown.
Both the Crown and defence agreed
that Imeson would remain in custody
until Nov. 2 when he would once again
appear for a video hearing at 10 a.m.
He is facing first-degree murder
charges in the shooting deaths of the
Regiers, a South Huron couple found
slain in their home near Mount Carmel
in July.
•Imeson has also been charged with
first-degree murder in the strangling
death of Windsor bartender Carlos
Rivera.
The crimes sparked a two-week
provincewide manhunt, which ended on
July 31 in Portage -Du -Fort, Que., after
the Regiers' stolen pickup trick was
found in a dense bush nearby.

Mitchell
jubilant
after
provincial
Liberal win
Cheryl Heath
A jubilant Carol Mitchell greeted
Liberal -party supporters Wednesday
night at the Central Huron town
hall auditorium after it was clear
victory was assured.
Though initial polls had Mitchell
and next closest rival Progressive
Conservative candidate Rob Morley.
in a dead heat, Mitchell soon took
the lead and didn't let go by
garnering 20,461 votes or 46 per
cent of the popular vote.
"We did it," said Mitchell, with
fists raised in victory, upon greeting
well wishers on Wednesday,
alongside family members including
her husband, Larry, and daughter,
Gabe.
In a meeting with reporters,
Mitchell gave praise to supporters
and party members for the win.
"It really is wonderful," she says.
"It's such a dynamic riding, and it
really is such a privilege to serve it."
Mitchell says the campaign's main
issue proved to be the Progressive
Conservative's initial pledge to fund
faith -based schools.
What she was hearing when
knocking on doors, said Mitchell, is
that people are pleased by the path
the Liberals are traversing.
"People recognize that there was a
lot of hard work done in this riding,"
she said, adding there are "a lot of
projects on the table that we want to
surge forward."
As for whether Mitchell's strong
showing will lead to a cabinet
position, the second time MPP was
mum.
"It's up to the boss," she said,
adding she plans to keep her
"running shoes polished."
