'They were cheering for you by name,' says MacRae
From Page 17
It took the pair just two
hours and 13 minutes to
complete the journey, beating
their goal of 2:15.
"It was one of the greatest
experiences of my life," said
O'Leary.
"I have got to know dad on
a whole new level. He's an
amazing person, husband,
father, grandfather and
mostly friend," she said.
"Running the last 200 -
metres and grabbing dad's
hand as we crossed the finish
line is a moment I will never
forget. I'm so very proud of
all of us," she said.
MacRae said he also
enjoyed the excitement of the
crowd.
"There was over 12,000
people running down the
streets of Toronto, it was
incredible. It was an experi-
ence with the crowds on both
sides cheering and holler-
ing," he said.
"They had bands playing
along the way, and people
handing out water to you and
when they would hand you
the water, they wouldn't just
hand you water, they were
cheering for you by name,"
he said, noting that each
runner had their first name
visible on their bibs, or on
their chest.

MacRae said they want to
do it again and are consid-
ering doing the full
marathon next year - mark-
ing his 60th birthday this
time.
Other Mitchell -area run-
ners, such as Lee Anne
Rocher, Heather Monden and
Mary Katherine Simmons,
took part in the half -
marathon in Toronto, too,
and trained together to pre-
pare.
O'Leary said she credits
Simmons, who beat her per-
sonal goal in the race, for
bringing up the idea of com-
peting in the first place.
