County council OKs funding for Vanastra repairs
From Page 9
is used along with CPR in the first
few minutes, survival rates can go
from five per cent to 50 per cent.
Boundary bridges
Coun. Bert Dykstra (Central
Huron) made it known that he
doesn't object to the county down-
loading boundary bridges as long as
the appropriate amount of funding
goes along with it.
Coun. Bernie MacLellan (Huron
East) added it is going to be difficult
to quantify what is meant by up -to -
standard bridges.
Council approved highways depart-
ment recommendations that will
allow for remediation work on 10
boundary bridges at an estimated
total cost of $149,500.
Funding OK'd
Council OK'd Cultural Services'
recommendations that will see both
Huron East and Branch 140
(Clinton) of the Royal Canadian
Legion receive funding for projects
under the newly introduced Huron
Heritage Fund.
Huron East will receive $3,435 for
the $6,870 in repairs at the Vanastra
gates, while the Legion is getting
$5,000 in support for its $28,600
restoration project on the Bayfield
cenotaph.
More dough
Council learned the county muse-
um will have $36,443 extra to work
with thanks to a community museum
operating grant increase issued by
the province. The cultural -services
committee will be reporting back to
the county on possibilities for the
extra cash.
Under review
Coun. Bert Dykstra (Central
Huron) is hoping county council will
have a chance to peruse the findings
of library -board members who recent-
ly took a tour of all of the county's
library branches.
Beth Ross, director of cultural ser-
vices, reported the board will be dis-
cussing its finding, and perhaps mak-
ing recommendations, at its Oct. 11
meeting. She said a report will then
be forwarded to council.
Flu season
Penny Nelligan, director of the
Huron County Health Unit, reported
the county will begin its annual
influenza inoculation clinics on Oct.
30.
Paying tribute
Coun. Ken Oke (South Huron)
took time out to give kudos to staff
members at the Children's Aid
Society.
Oke said that though staff mem-
bers face more than a fair share of
criticism, the bulk of them are caring
citizens who came to work at CAS
because of personal connections to it.
Oke also noted October is Child
Abuse Prevention Month.
Spruced up
Coun. Max Demaray (Howick)
noted work on the Wroxeter bridge is
now complete, though council is con-
cerned with some cement left at the
site.
Warden's report
Warden Deb Shewfelt reported the
month of September was a busy one
that saw him attending everything
from a Heartland Credit Union
announcement to dedicate $10,000
towards apprenticeship training as
part of a joint venture with the
Huron Manufacturing Association, to
attending the OPP awards gala in
London.
Shewfelt also participated the
10th -anniversary celebration of the
CPR bridges in Goderich, as well as
an infrastructure conference, dubbed,
Build Canada.
He said "there might be some dif-
ferent things we can go after" in con-
nection to $22 billion in funding
available via the feds.
Shewfelt also took part in an
employee -recognition banquet for the
Huronlea and Huronview seniors'
home which highlighted how well
appreciated the county staff are by
the residents.
