The Ausable Bayfield Maitland. Valley Source Water Protection Authority announced the membership of its source - protection committee dur- ing a meet -and -greet event in Clinton on Oct. 3. Created through a part- nership between the two local conservation authori- ties, "the committee will have an important role over the coming four years in developing science - based plans that will help protect our most valuable resource, which is clean drinking water," chairman Larry Brown said. "We need to invest in the most important piece of infrastructure we have for human health - drinking water." Brown, a long-time Parkhill -area resident, is a registered professional engineer and a member of the Association of Municipal Administrators of Ontario. He held the position of chief administrative offi- cer for the Municipality of South Huron since amal- gamation in 2000. The local source protec- tion committee - a requirement of the 2006 Ontario Clean Water Act - is the first of its kind to be formed in the province. According to legislation, the committee will be responsible for preparing a terms of reference, assessment report and source protection plan for the region. "The process has been and will continue to be challenging, but the most important jobs are never easy," said Bill Weber, chairman of the Ausable Bayfield Source Protection Authority. Five of the 15 voting members were selected from the municipal sector - Marilyn Miltenburg (Ashfield-Colborne- Wawanosh), Ian Brebner (North Middlesex), Meredith Schneider (North Perth), Don Jones (West Perth) and Jim Nelemans (Morris- Turnberry). Receiving at least double the num- ber of applications required to fill the 15 positions, project manager Cathie Brown said the selection process was difficult. "Not only did we pick great indi- viduals to serve on the committee, but we had to leave out some very qualified people, who we hope will chose to be involved in future work- ing groups," she explained. "There's a wealth of knowledge out there and we're trying to tap into that." Mark Beaven, Maitland Valley Source Protection Authority chair- man, said the committee was one "to be proud of." "We'll have a lot of strong voices at the table to speak for different sec- tors and interests and I think we'll have a better plan in the end because of that," Brown added. "It's a road map to a better future." Brown said the committee plans to meet once a month, but may need to hold biweekly meetings in the begin- ning. The first meeting is tentatively set for Oct. 25. Meetings of the committee are open to the public. For more infor- mation and notification of future meetings see www. sourcewaterinfo.on.ca.
