Huron OPP
charge 112
drivers
during
seatbelt
campaign
A total of 112 drivers
were charged with
failing to wear their
seatbelts during the fall
seatbelt campaign in
Huron County, says the
Huron OPP.
Officers were kept
busy checking nearly
13,000 vehicles and
laying charges during
the weeklong campaign.
Twelve passengers
were also charged and
one child restraint
violation was found.

Councillor
wants to avoid
millions in
interest with
FHT building

Finding a way to pay more upfront for a
new building for the Huron Family Health
Team (FHT) in Seaforth is the way
Tuckersmith Coun. Larry McGrath wants to
go.
Presenting figures to Huron East council at
its Oct. 2 meeting, McGrath pointed out that
a 20 -year debenture of $2 million at six or
seven per cent will mean council paying from
$1.4 to $1.7 million in interest.
"Let's do a little pinching and saving and
get the building paid off in a hurry," he said.
McGrath added that he'd rather see the
building generating revenue for the
municipality than taxpayers paying millions
in interest.
"We could do a lot of road construction for
that amount of money," he said.
McGrath also suggested that taxpayers
might not mind putting off a few road
construction projects for a few years if it
meant owning a revenue-producing facility.
Huron East Clerk -Administrator Jack
McLachlan said the municipality could either
postpone capital construction for a couple of
years to allow more money to go upfront
towards the FHT building or use the reserves
and pay them back later.
"A decision still has to be made on that," he
said. "There has to be a meeting where you
