Clinton food bank expands services, offers emergency shelter
Shelter seeks letter of support from Avon Maitland District School Board
Stew Slater
An emergency shelter in Clinton,
which found an almost immediate
need for services upon opening in
late September, has requested an
official expression of support from
the Avon Maitland District School
Board.
Friends of the Community, begun
in 2006 as a volunteer -run food
bank, expanded its offerings with
the opening of a youth support cen-
tre at 44 Mill Street on Sept. 19.
The facility has three beds for
emergency shelter, and also pro-
vides access to treatment or refer-
s
rals to other social service organiza-
tions.
Some time this month, the group
hopes to open a second facility at an
as -yet -undisclosed Clinton location,
containing eight beds and a secure
indoor area for the specialized treat-
ment of young women facing drug-
related or other social troubles.
The organization now includes
about 35 trained volunteers, and
expects to employ three support
workers once the two facilities are
fully up and running.
Organization director Mike
Doucette made a delegation to Avon
Maitland trustees Tuesday, Sept.

25, noting provincial regulations
require such youth -centred facilities
to inform school boards about their
activities. He welcomed the board to
provide a letter of support if they
wished.
Doucette explained 79 families,
representing 226 people, have used
the food bank service in recent
months.
Still, he said the organization was
surprised with how quickly the need
for the youth emergency centre
became apparent once it opened.
"The biggest thing that threw me
off was the idea of homeless youth,"
he told trustees. "We built the cen-

we really didn't want to have to use
them. And then we did have to use
it."
He added the school boards cer-
tainly will have a role to play if and
when services are sought by a youth
who is currently attending school.
Then, it may become necessary to
tailor the person's schooling pur-
suits with the services they require
from other agencies.
Funding for the organization
comes from various levels of govern-
ment, including a three-year,
$15,000 commitment from the
municipality of Central Huron.
