Mock disaster
trains hospital
staff to
protect selves,
patients
Susan Hundertmark
Dressed in silver decontamination suits
that are duct -taped over boots, plastic gloves
and respirator masks, staff from Seaforth and
Clinton hospitals looked like something out of
a science fiction movie.
In a mock disaster that simulated anything
from a fire in an illegal meth amphetamine
lab to a chemical spill of a transport truck on
a local highway, hospital staff were trained
last week in the ways to protect themselves
and those inside the hospital when a
chemical, radiological, biological or nuclear
accident occurs.
"We're taking front line staff and teaching
them how to properly treat and
decontaminate patients during any type of
natural or terrorist event," said registered
nurse Richard Raptopoulos, one of the
trainers.
Raptopoulos said that in a world that's seen
SARS and the terrorist attack of Sept. 11,
2001, the Ontario government decided
training to deal with decontaminating
casualties, from single people to mass
casualties, was important.
While training exercises have been
happening throughout the province for the
past four years, this was the first time the
Susan Hundertmark photo session was held in Seaforth.
