Council using caution with gas
station up for tax sale in Seaforth
Susan Hundertniark
Worries about the high costs of liability and
the possible need for an environmental clean-
up is causing Huron East council to treat a
Seaforth gas station up for tax sale with cau-
tion.
"We have done a lot of investigating over
the last two weeks and there is an outstand-
ing order against the property. There also
used to be a fuel tank there at one time and
we have no idea of the potential liability,"
Clerk -Administrator Jack McLachlan told
council at its Sept. 17 meeting.
The former Sunny's Petro Canada gas hair
at the corner of Goderich Street and Victoria
Street is the subject of a tax sale on Oct. 2
and will be auctioned off at 11) ani. at the
Huron County courthouse in Goderich.
Seaforth Coun. Bob Fisher had earlier
expressed an interest in having the niunici-
pality look into buying the property and
Deputy -Clerk Brad Knight agreed that the
property is very visible to anyone
passing through Seaforth.
"It is a property you see as you go
down Highway 8 and 1 don't think it
should be left to go downhill any fur-
ther than it already has," he said.
"I don't want to touch it," said
Tuckersmith Coun. Larry McGrath.
"They've done bore tests around it
and you could run your car on the
mud."
Asked by Brussels Coun. David
Blaney if the municipality would be
liable if there is an environmental
order against the property,
McLachlan said the municipality
would only be liable if it owned the
property.
McLachlan said he will ask the
county not to vest the property to
Huron East if the minimum bid is
not met at the tax sale.
"There are three tanks there," he
said, adding in a report to council
that there is an order by the
Technical Standards Safety
Authority to have the gas tanks
removed.
"We want to be cautious of this
property," he said.
Council to approach bank, BIA
for help with mural
Huron East will be approaching the
TD -Canada Trust bank and the
Seaforth BIA (Business
Improvement Area) to ask for some
financial help repairing the mural
displayed on the bank wall.
"That's a pretty expensive mural,"
said Brussels Coun. David Blaney
when council was given an estimate
of repairs at its Sept. 1 meeting.
Council received .t quote of
$7,374.50 from Egmondville artist
Andrea Longstaff to clean, paint and
apply a protection coat to the mural.
Clerk -Administrator Jack McLachlan said
the • cost was close to the original amount to
buy the mural.
Tuckersmith Coun. Les Falconer suggested
approaching the bank while Seaforth Coun.
Bob Fisher suggested asking the BIA.
"It never hurts to ask," said Falconer.
"Do we fix it up or do we burn it? This is the
only interest we've had," said Fisher of the
quote.
Tuckersmith Coun. Larry McGrath asked if
the mural would last longer with the protec-
tive coating Longstaff was suggesting to use
in her quote.
"Was it put on the first time," he asked. "I
think you've got to fix it properly. You can't
cheap out."
Seaforth Coni'i. -Joe Stefflc'r said the mural
was worth fixing;.
"There's a lot of History in that mural. I'd
like Jack to approach the hank and ask for a
donation," he said.
