Tennis popularity in Seaforth continues to grow
Aaron Jacklin
It was a good summer for tennis
lessons in Seaforth, according to
instructor Hank Binnendyk.
"It went very well," said
Binnnendyk. "We had a very excel-
lent turnout and I think it was
enjoyed by everyone."
The weather cooperated.
"It was actually a nice summer for
it. We had only one rain date, so it
worked out really well."
Binnendyk said he had more stu-
dents this year with 47 students
spread over five different classes.
"I had nothing but very positive
comments," he said, noting that
many people told him that as soon
as the season starts again next year,
he should call them so they can do it
again.
• "It's very rewarding," he said. "I
think we're one community with our
whole area that I can think of that
is actually running a program like
that."
He says the problem with many
courts in small communities is that
they're "open to the four winds."
"They're very poorly maintained
and so the interest isn't there," he
said.
The Seaforth courts are locked.
Users paid $35 at the beginning of
the season to get a key and will get
$10 of that back when they return it
this fall.
Binnendyk wishes they could get
together enough people interested
in playing to get a club going, but
says Seaforth isn't there yet. He
says we may get there if interest
continues to grow.
He said he'd like to get some of the
people in the Bridges development
who are interested in playing tennis
involved, but notes that the Bridges
management is planning to build a
court over there as part of the recre-
ation facility they're promoting.
He thinks there are more people
using the courts in general, though
notes it's hard for him to say since
he's not always there.
"Everybody's commenting how
well -kept the courts are, and that is
an added attraction, as far as I'm

concerned," he said. "I think the
idea of locking up the gates was a
very positive move."
Binnendyk hopes to teach again
next year.
"I intend to conduct tennis clinics
again next year, if all is well, if I
stay on the right side of the sod," he
said with a laugh, noting that he
enjoys teaching the sport.
Of the 15 players on the St. Anne's
tennis team, six are students of
Binnendyk's.
While lessons are over, some peo-
ple are still getting some use out of
the courts.
Binnendyk said that with the
shorter days, people who paid $10 to
get a key that lets them turn on the
overhead lights are the only ones
using the courts now. .
He says they'll have to look at the
fee structure for the lights, since the
lights are expensive to run and the
$10 fee doesn't reflect that.
