Down one path lies thq American Hockey League and -the Toronto Marlies. Down the other is the East Coast Hockey League and the Columbia Inferno in South Carolina. Doig doesn't get a choice; he'll get an assignment. "It's pretty stressful," he said on his cell phone last Monday night. "We'll see how it goes." Doig and the other rookies are living in a hotel in Toronto right now and don't know how long they'll be there. "I could be here for up to a month," he said. "Everybody will be in the hotel until they either tell you to get a place in Toronto - that means you're starting the year here - or you just stay in the hotel until they say, `We're send- ing you down. "We just got here Sunday and had our workout with the minor Leafs." Doig said most of the players who will be sent down to the Marlies from the Leafs have been already. "So basically, I'm trying to work hard and practise every day and hopefully get in a few exhibition games and impress enough people to start the season here." Doig just finished a rookie tour- nament with the Leafs in Kitchener. They played four games in four days against teams from Ottawa, Florida and Pittsburgh. They faced each team once in round robin play with the top two play- ing in the final game and the other two in the consolation final Toronto finished third in the tournament, with a win, loss and a tie in round robin play and then won the consolation final. "It was a good experience. I thought I played pretty well there and played every game," said Doig.
