Wingham Anchormen are champions during
first year in Niagara Rugby Union
While they began the season with
the aim of making the playoffs, the
Wingham Anchormen - which
includes a half dozen players from
Seaforth - won the championship
during their first year in the
Niagara Rugby Union.
The Anchormen won their final
game against the first place
Norfolk Harvesters for the NRU B
Men's Rugby Championship.
The Anchormen rolled over
Brantford, the first place team in
the east, 35-5 to secure a spot in the
championship, but they would have
to face their rivals from Norfolk
once again to battle for the champi-
onship, and they were up for the
task.
Facing the Harvesters for the
third time this season, after split-
ting the first two matches, the
Anchormen knew they were in
tough.
It proved to be the hard-hitting
affair the fans came to see, and in
the end it was the Wingham
Anchormen on top 20-12 to claim
their first ever championship.

would not let slip away.
The championship game was less
about the speed that destroyed
Brantford the week before, and
more about the hard hits and the
strength of the defense.

BOWLING
ST. JAMES
Sept. 10 _
On several occasions the
Anchormen were pinned deep, and
—after trying to pound the
Anchormeir defense over and over
unsuccessfully, the Anchormen
would turn the ball over' and march
right back down the field, sending
the Harvesters into fits.
Having only been in existence
since 2004, the Wingham team has
steadily improved, and the calibre of
players has really taken off.
The championship game was led
by Ryan Clancy (2005 league MVP),
perfect on the day, making both con-
verts as well as two penalty kicks
for 10 points, as well as tries scored
by Dave Prentice (2006 league
MVP), and Ronnie Higgins (league
leading try scorer and 2007 MVP
candidate), both graduates of the
F.E. Madill rugby program.
The team also has several mem-
bers with ties to the St. Anne's
Rugby program in Clinton including
Michael Lambert of Goderich who
was selected as the Man of the
Match for Wingham.
Seaforth players on the
Anchormen include Garrett Van
Dieten, Mark Van Dieten, Chris
Cronin, Shawn Van Bakel, Tom
Veens and Luke Veens.
