Wingham Anchormen are champions during first year in Niagara Rugby Union While they began the season with the aim of making the playoffs, the Wingham Anchormen - which includes a half dozen players from Seaforth - won the championship during their first year in the Niagara Rugby Union. The Anchormen won their final game against the first place Norfolk Harvesters for the NRU B Men's Rugby Championship. The Anchormen rolled over Brantford, the first place team in the east, 35-5 to secure a spot in the championship, but they would have to face their rivals from Norfolk once again to battle for the champi- onship, and they were up for the task. Facing the Harvesters for the third time this season, after split- ting the first two matches, the Anchormen knew they were in tough. It proved to be the hard-hitting affair the fans came to see, and in the end it was the Wingham Anchormen on top 20-12 to claim their first ever championship. The championship game was less about the speed that destroyed Brantford the week before, and more about the hard hits and the strength of the defense. JAMES Sept. 10 _ On several occasions the Anchormen were pinned deep, and —after trying to pound the Anchormeir defense over and over unsuccessfully, the Anchormen would turn the ball over' and march right back down the field, sending the Harvesters into fits. Having only been in existence since 2004, the Wingham team has steadily improved, and the calibre of players has really taken off. The championship game was led by Ryan Clancy (2005 league MVP), perfect on the day, making both con- verts as well as two penalty kicks for 10 points, as well as tries scored by Dave Prentice (2006 league MVP), and Ronnie Higgins (league leading try scorer and 2007 MVP candidate), both graduates of the F.E. Madill rugby program. The team also has several mem- bers with ties to the St. Anne's Rugby program in Clinton including Michael Lambert of Goderich who was selected as the Man of the Match for Wingham. Seaforth players on the Anchormen include Garrett Van Dieten, Mark Van Dieten, Chris Cronin, Shawn Van Bakel, Tom Veens and Luke Veens.
