Close to 20 meet to discuss
renovations at Seaforth arena

Close to 20 people attended a public
meeting last Wednesday to discuss
renovations to the lobby and change
rooms at the Seaforth arena.
Most of the people who spoke talked
about what they wanted the renovations
to accomplish, while a few expressed
concerns over how much the renovations
-wdtild cost.
Paul Vander Molen, who sits on the
arena board, started the meeting with
background.
"Back in 2000, we looked at doing an
expansion of the arena," he said. "It was
mostly inspired by the need for more ice
time. It didn't materialize."
He said that a few years later they
looked at doing some lobby renovations
and were given a donation of about
$18,000 for the renovation "to make the
indoor viewing area more open and
accessible."
'shat didn't get off the ground either.
"The board would like to revisit the
idea of doing a renovation to what I refer
to as the front part of the arena, which
would include the concession area, the
entrance, the viewing area and the

Council
votes to
tender for
new FHT
building
Susan Hundertmark
Huron East council decided in an
8-2 recorded vote Monday night to
tender for a new medical building for
the Huron family health team (FHT)
in Seaforth.
The 12,100 square foot building,
estimated to cost $2.5 million, will
be added on to the east side of the
8,250 square foot Community Care
Access Centre (CCAC) building
behind the Seaforth Medical Centre.
Mayor Joe Seili said the building
will be debentured by Huron East
but will not add any additional costs
to the municipal budget since a
maximum of $50,000 will be spent
each year - the same amount Huron
East budgeted for two years to
contribute towards the Seaforth
Medical Centre.
"We don't know how many years
the debenture will be until we
tender. It's chicken and egg on the
costs until we know what the
construction will cost. We're hoping
the tender comes in at less than we
expected," he says.
Seili said the Seaforth
Community Development Trust,
which owns the two and a half acres
of land the FHT building will be
erected on, will fund any costs
exceeding the $50,000 a year.
Economic development officer
Ralph Laviolette, who has been
acting as interim administrative
manager for the FHT since last
August, said the plan is to have the
building self-supporting within three
years with rental income.
"More than enough health
professionals will be attracted to the
community because of the
