Seaforth Shell participates in
new Huron accessibility initiative
While it's always offered full service to those
who need it, the Seaforth Shell gas station is
looking into creating a large sign informing
customers of that fact.
The self -serve gas station, one of four
Edwards Fuels stations in Huron County, has
been participating since it was approached to
join the Huron County accessibility advisory
committee's new initiative.
The new program is designed to aid the
region's physically challenged residents and
its seniors with special signage to alert pass-
ing motorists that full service is available to
those in need.
"We were asked to participate and received
a letter and sign from the county in July and
we put the sign up in ce," says Steve
Gower, Edward s' retail coordinator.
"The sign the program sent out is a little
small so looking at what Archie's UPI did
(with a larger sign at the roadside), that
might be a good idea," he says.
The accessibility committee recently cele-
brated Archie's UPI's roadside sign promoting
the program.
Despite the fact it is a self -serve station,
Gower says Shell staff are instructed to run
outside to customers who look like they may
be having difficulties with the pump or just
need help.
"Sometimes it's difficult having to leave the
till but they can usually get outside and tell
the person they'll be with them in five min-
utes," he says of circumstances when there's a
line-up of customers inside the gas station.
Karen Martin, manager of Seaforth Shell,
says staff gets to know the regulars who need
help pumping gas and are happy to oblige.
"We always take care of
people. The customer
comes first and we're will-
ing to help," she says.
"You just juggle it - you
get used to it," says
Martin.
She says that since the
gas station building is
inaccessible to wheel-
chairs, staff also serves
customers in wheelchairs
by bringing the products
they wish to buy outside to
them.
Jennifer Cowan, coordi-
nator of the Huron accessi-
bility advisory committee,
says 13 gas stations in
Huron County are partici-
pating in the new initia-
tive, most of them full -
serve stations.
