Seaforth hospital `doing something right' to
attract volunteers, local advisory committee told

Seaforth Community Hospital is
doing something right when it
comes to attracting volunteers, the
Seaforth Local Advisory Committee
(LAC) was told at its Monday meet-
ing.
Alla Mota, manager volunteer
coordinator of the Huron -Perth
Healthcare Alliance, gave LAC
members an overview of her chal-
lenges attracting volunteers to all
departments of Alliance hospitals.
She said that after developing a
volunteer website for the Alliance,
she received responses from
Seaforth people interested in volun-
teering.
But, she added that volunteers
are changing. She said retired peo-
ple looking to volunteer are skilled
people who want to continue using
their skills.
"But, the people working hard to
raise money are disappearing," she
said.
She pointed out volunteers, both
adults and students in Seaforth,
who have been contributing at the
hospital longer than a year, which is
rare.
"Keeping a teen for a year is a lot
- it doesn't happen that much any-
more," -she said, adding that
Seaforth's five student volunteers
compares to only five in Stratford.
"Here (in Seaforth), we're doing
something right and much better,"
she. said.
Student Tanya Costello, who con-
tributed a total of 148 hours from
June, 2002 to May, 2007 was given
honourable mention. She is the
recipient this year of the Seaforth
Auxiliary bursary of $500.
Site administrator Mary Cardinal
said Seaforth has "a good slate" of
student volunteers currently.
"It's a long day at the hospital and
we need to make it engaging for the
patients and the students," she said,
adding that volunteers spend time
reading, playing cards or going out-
doors with patients.
Auxiliary president Frances
Teatero told the LAC that while stu-
dents used to volunteer at the hos-
pital for five years in a row, "you're
very lucky to keep them for one
year."
"You've got to keep them interest-
ed or they move on," she said.
Grace Dolmage pointed out that
many high school students have
after school jobs so even with the
provincial requirement to put in 40
hours of volunteer time for a high
school diploma, it's tough to get vol-
unteers.
LAC chair Tony Van Den Hengel
expressed amazement that with 40
hours needed, students don't volun-
teer at the hospital.
"It's easier to help coach a team or
go to the library. If they're not inter-
ested in the health field, they won't
come," said Mota.
Teatero. said the hospital auxiliary
makes every attempt to make vol-
unteering fun and has success keep-
ing those adults who begin volun-
teering.
"The ones we get normally stay.
When I was asked how long we keep
our volunteers, I said, 'Till death do
us part.' We have fun and a good
cause," she said.
Scott appointed to HPHA
Seaforth hospital's LAC member
Bill Scott was recently appointed to
the Huron Perth Healthcare
Alliance board of directors to repre-
sent the Stratford catchment area
as a "member at large," site admin-
istrator Mary Cardinal announced
at Monday's LAC meeting.
"Bill will be an excellent addition
to the board," she said.
