New bear cub mascot carving greets students
during return to Seaforth Public School this fall
Susan Hundertmark
When Seaforth Public School stu-
dents returned to school last week
from their summer holidays, a new
carving of their school mascot was
looking down on them from an old
tree stump into the northern school
entrance.
"We wanted it to face the front
and turned a little to welcome the
kids in the alley," says SPS princi-
pal Kim Black.
Black says the idea for the carv-
ing, created by Mount Forest sculp-
tor Peter Mogensen who uses a
chainsaw to carve his sculptures,
came during plans to beautify the
school during the Communities in
Bloom competition last summer in
Seaforth.
"That old stump has always been
there and we always said we should
carve it," says Black.
She asked the students to vote on
' an image for the carving and the
majority wanted the school mascot,
the Seaforth Cub.
The carved bear holds an apple
and a' book to recognize the Avon
Maitland District School Board's
logo in light of its 10th anniversary
this year.
The six-foot tall carving, which
cost $100 a foot, is being paid for by
the Seaforth Public School council
from fundraisers done throughout
last year.
"It's a gift to the school from the
school council," says Black, adding
that usually fundraisers by the
school council go towards supplies
and equipment the school needs.
Because the tree stump was found
to be cracked all the way through,
the sculptor had to choose another
piece of wood to create the carving.
But, it has been mounted on the
original stump.
