Minimum biosecurity standards

the authority and experience to

OMAFRA would work to sup-
port them.
According to Alves, the simula-
tions get people thinking about
everything that goes into stop-
ping the spread of an outbreak as
soon as possible.
He says that while that's all
good, there's nothing like preven-
tion.
"All the fancy scientific models
will support that," he says. "You
really need day-to-day protection
and biosecurity in all those sec-
tors that I mentioned."

That's sometimes a tough sell
and Alves notes that some sectors
are further ahead than others.
"But in this kind of ball game
you can't have any weak links,"
he says.
The idea of the basic minimum
daily biosecurity standards, he
says, is that if anything like this
comes to Ontario, regular farm-
ers will have already "dampened
it down" before they're even
aware they have it.
"Once it gets away from you, it
can cause quite a situation, like
we saw in the UK"

Examples of the minimum
standards Alves refers to is being
aware of the health of the ani-
mals coming onto a farm, wash:
ing boots and hands and a regu-
lar relationship with a veterinari-
an.
"Every farm should have some
kind of relationship and be able
to get a very rapid diagnosis on
something when they think
something is wrong," he says.
"Unfortunately, that's not the
case across all the farms in
Ontario," he says. "I think it's
something everyone can work
on."
