Using a wheelchair for the past 17 years, McLachlan finds it very diffi- cult, if not impossible, to pump his own gas. With the increasing number of self -serve gas stations around - some of them fully -automated with no attendant to ask for help he's always worried he might end up stranded on a roadside with an empty tank of gas. But, a new ini- tiative by Huron County's accessi- bility advisory committee, designed to aid the region's physically chal- Ii mov CASH PAID ON BULK QUANTITIES AND CARS CALL FOR DETAILS 519-318-0241 or 519-808-6300 Glen McLachlan, of Vanastra, poses with Larry Dolmage, of Archie's UPI gas station while he gets gas at the full service station, recognized by the Huron County acces- sibility advisory committee. Seaforth's Archie's UPI sta- tion is currently the first and only gas station in Huron County to post signage advertising its full service to motorists. "We've been asking for volun- tary support and UPI in Seaforth is the only sta- tion doing some- thing on their own initiative," says Jennifer Cowan, coordina- tor of the Huron accessibility advisory commit- tee. McLachlan, who is a member of the accessibili- ty committee, says the idea of the signage - which is so far unique to Huron County - is an attempt to make the region more attractive for seniors and the physically chal- lenged. "We wanted to make Huron County more friendly. There's nothing worse than realizing you only have one-eighth of a tank of gas and not knowing where you can fill up," says McLachlan. "It's also a big fear for seniors. Many can't work the pumps prop- erly anymore," adds Seaforth Coun. Bob Fisher, another member of the accessibility See COUNTY, Page 21
