Foot-and-mouth disease
not a pressing concern
with area farmers
Aaron Jacklin
GMOIMMI
While movement bans have been
lifted in recent weeks in the UK
after the foot-and-mouth outbreak
in Surrey last month, concerns
about the disease are barely on the
radar of area farmers, according to
Huron County Federation of
Agriculture president Stephen
Thompson.
More broadly, they are concerned
with general issues of livestock
health and biosecurity, especially
since getting "caught flat-footed" on

"Biosecurity is partly to protect
our livestock from other, influences,
but it also works the other way, to
protect us from any adverse things,"
says Thompson, noting biosecurity
is a group of protocals that are
intended to prevent contamination
from entering or leaving a group of
livestock.
"If, God forbid, our livestock were
to get contaminated with some-
thing, it prevents the spread of any-
thing to individuals."
As far as Huron County is con-
cerned, Thompson sees the outbreak
in the UK as a cautionary tale.
"It just shows that regardless of
the degree of vigilance, there are
still errors," he said. "It shows us
that errors can still be made and it
reminds us once again that we
always need systems and proce-
dures in place in order to deal with
these things."
None of which is to say the effects
of a foot-and-mouth outbreak in
Ontario wouldn't be serious.
According to Dr. David Alves,
Assistant Chief Veterinarian at
OMAFRA, the potential conse-
quences of any kind of outbreak in
the agricultural sector are so serious
that experts refer to a time like now,
where there isn't an outbreak, as
"peacetime."
"We have many cattle farms, one
of the biggest sheep industries in
Canada and the biggest, or close to
it, swine industry," he says.
All of those animals would poten-
tially be at risk during a foot-and-
mouth outbreak. -
"Potentially, it could be very signif-
icant," he says. "That's why we're
trying to do a few things."
He says they've helped the
Ontario Livestock and Poultry
Council run preparedness simula-
tions in recent years.
"One was around Avian Influenza.
The other, along with the Canadian
Food Inspection Agency, was around
a simulated foot-and-mouth out-
break," he says.
After such simulations they ana-
lyze their strong and weak areas
before trying to
make improve-
ments.
"This disease
is one the CFIA -
our federal col-
leagues - take
the lead on," he
says. "They have
