A motion to lease the Brussels fire
hall as a standby location for Huron
County paramedics was tabled at
Huron East council's Aug. 7 meet-
ing.
The issue in dispute was the
amount of rent Huron County
would pay to use the fire hall.
While an original agreement in
May had stated $500 a month as
the rental rate, Huron East admin-
istration was surprised to receive a
new proposed fee of $300 a month in
July.
Deputy -Mayor Bernie MacLellan
asked council to table the issue
because he wanted to find out a rea-
son for the decreased amount at the
next county council meeting.
"I'm going to put up quite a stink
and fight for the $500. It's unrea-
sonable to accept the new letter
when they didn't say it would have
any changes," he said.
Clerk -Administrator Jack
McLachlan said a changed rental
rate was never discussed in negotia-
tions with the Huron County
Ambulance Services.
The county ambulance services
toured the fire hall in March, asking
for one outdoor parking space with
plans to be at the fire hall for 12
hours, seven days a week. The
arrangement was expected to give
increased coverage to residents of
the Brussels area.

"Where do they think they're
going to get another place in
Brussels with heat and hydro for
$500 a month?" asked Tuckersmith
Coun. Larry McGrath, joking that
maybe Huron East could provide
the paramedics with a pup tent
instead.
MacLellan said that while better
coverage for Huron East residents
was the bottom line, he still wanted
to know why the rental rate had
been decreased.
Huron East supports
fair funding group
The efforts of an advocacy group
set up to seek fair funding for
Ontario's smaller communities is
receiving support from Huron East.
Mayor Joe Seili, along with Clerk -
Administrator Jack McLachlan,
attended a meeting of the group in
Teeswater recently consisting of
municipalities who were rejected
when they applied for COMRIF
(Canada -Ontario Municipal Rural
Infra structure Fund) funding.
Seili said the group is pushing to
have more help for infrastructure
projects like roads and bridges.
"If the provincial government
mandating sew-
ers for
Egmondville,
they need to
mandate some of
the costs to go
with it," said
Seili, as an
example of the
kinds of funding
the group wants.
The fair fund-
ing group is ask-
ing for COMRIF
to be split up
into three sepa-
rate funds for
water and sewer
infrastructure,

The group also wants provincial
funding to be based on need instead
