Huron County gets funding for broadband access

Huron County is one of 18 suc-
cessful applications to the province
to gain funding to expand broad-
band access to rural Ontario.
Huron -Bruce MPP Carol Mitchell
made the announcement at Huron
East's town hall in Seaforth last
Tuesday that Huron County will be
receiving a maximum of $850,000 in
provincial funding to improve access
to highspeed Internet.
The one-third funding from the
province will be matched by two-
thirds funding by a successful appli-
cant telecommunications provider.
"We know that in order for the
business community to flourish, one
must have access to highspeed
Internet," said Mitchell, adding that
the funding for Huron County was
"long overdue."
She said that 30 applications were
made for the $10 million offered by
the province to increase broadband
access across Ontario.
Huron County Warden Deb
Shewfelt expressed his appreciation
for the provincial grant.
"It's been a long, tough road.
There are tremendous opportunities
in the county but to play the game
you really need highspeed," he said.
Acknowledging that Huron East
has the largest geographical area in"
the county without highspeed
Internet access, Mayor Joe Seili also
added his thanks.
"Broadband access is an economic
driver and it's been a thorn to
attract business here. This will help
bring us into the 21st century," said
Seili.
"A lot of areas already have high-
speed but this program will fill in
gaps to the sideroads that don't
have it," he said.
Consultant Brock Vodden, who
helped write the funding proposal,

ty, most of it in northern Huron

County including Grey, McKillop,

"When we're finished, it should be
close to 100 per cent covered," he
said.
Because Perth County received
the same amount of provincial fund-
ing, Huron will be working together
with Perth to "discuss possible syn-
ergies," said Carol Leeming, who is
leading the project for the county.
She said the project requires a
"quick timeline" with a business
plan and technical plan needed by
Oct. 5 and the work to begin on
building the network by Oct. 15. All
commitments must be concluded by
March 31.
"The strength of this is that more
people can have access to our com-
munity. It doesn't matter where you
live," said Leeming, adding that the
