Finlayson tournament draws about 100 players
Annual event has an excellent reputation due in part to the high-quality field

Beginners and experts
and locals and visitors
all took part in the
Anniversary Lawn
Bowling Tournament
last week.
Formally known as
the Art Finlayson
Memorial Tournament,
the day attracts lawn
bowlers from all over
Southwestern Ontario.
From Sarnia to
Southampton to
Burlington, lawn
bowlers make their way
into town to take part
in this well-known tour-
nament.
Beginning in 1979,
the tournament annual-
ly attracted more than
100 bowlers. Thirty-
eight years later, there
is still a good turnout of
about 100 people, all
keen to have fun.
Clara Cosyns, of
Tillsonburg, says, "It's
just a nice day out."
Ed Braithwaite has
been coming from
Sarnia to the tourna-
ment for a couple years
now.
"This is always a
great tournament."
Local lawn bowlers
say people like coming
to Seaforth because it is
one pf the best fields
around. The Seaforth
lawn is longer than
most and it's an attrac-
tion for visiting lawn
bowlers.
The age range of
those participating in
the tournament was
wide. The healthy mix
allowed family members
to play together.
Kaitlin Ryan, of
Kitchener, was bowling
with her uncle. This
was the second year at
the tournament for her.
Southampton resident
Rita Wright has been
coming to the tourna-
ment as well for a num-
ber of years.
"It's the best tourna-
ment in the area," she

says. "And it's because of
the merchants. Most tour-
naments' prizes are money
or gift certificates but it
means more with prizes
from merchants."
