Seaforth gets early hockey fix with Shoot2Score
Teams captained by Boyd Devereaux and Dan Wildfong face off in celebrity game
Aaron Jacklin
Hockey season hasn't even started
yet, but Seaforth got an early fix
last week.
`The first hockey camp in years
was followed on Friday with a
celebrity game at the Seaforth
arena.
Boyd Devereaux of the Toronto
Maple Leafs was among those who
played.
He said it was fun to get out on
the ice, noting that the last time
he'd played at the Seaforth arena
was several years ago at one of the
camps organized by Dave
McLlwain.
Devereaux had come back to town
earlier in the day before the
Shoot2Score hockey camp wrapped
up for the week.
"I got here, put the blades on and
went out on the ice," he said. "It was
very casual. The kids were fun to
chat with during the scrimmage."
Devereaux and Dan Wildfong, one
of the people behind Shoot2Score
and, Texas Brahmas head coach,
captained the two teams that
played in the celebrity game Friday
night.
Like Devereaux, many of the pray-
ers at Friday night's game got their
start in Seaforth Minor Hockey
before moving up to play for other
leagues.
Team Devereaux was made up of
Devereaux, Ken Carrell, Mike
Jarmuth, Cal O'Reilly, Mike
McLaughlin, Luke Vick, Jason
Basile, James Marsden and Derek
Nesbitt.
Team Wildfong was made up of
Wildfong, Justin Peters, Anthony
Peters, Andy MacDonald, Ryan
"Snook" O'Reilly, Tyler Doig, Joey
Hishon, Jim Campbell, Craig
Minard and Jason Williams.

organized the

Ron Pryce,
president of
Seaforth Minor
Hockey said they
hope to do it
again next year
and maybe even
get some more
big games before
then.
"We hope this
event gives the
season a good
jump start," he
said, noting
minor hockey
starts the first
week of
September.
"We wouldn't
have had this
great success if it
wasn't for the
support of the
great hockey par-
ents and the
community," he
said.
Seventy-two
kids attended Shoot2Score last
week. Wildfong said the camp
exceeded expectations.
"It's been unbelievable," he said
Friday morning. "All the instructors
we've had here have done a fabu-
lous job. To have so many kids
attend is great."
He saw a lot of growth over the
course of the week, noting that
some kids hadn't even known how
to skate at the beginning of the
week.
"We did a lot of team building
activities," said Wildfong. "I think
that's one of the most important
things that camps don't really rec-
ognize." •
While on -ice drills and games
were a part of the week, children
also played other sports like soccer,

drills during last week's Shoot2Score hockey camp at the
ball hockey and dodge ball.
"You've got to be a well-rounded
athlete to play sports," he said.
It wasn't just physical work.
"We did video -analysis with them,
video-taping them on the ice to
show them what they did wrong."
Wildfong is quick to share the
credit for the camp, calling Brian
and Sandra Melady and Maureen
Wildfong the "backbone of the whole
thing."
Dan said that the feedback from
parents has been positive and they
plan to hold the camp again next
year.
"The week's been absolutely won-
derful," said organizer and instruc-
tor Brian Melady.

"The kids have been fantastic
because they've worked hard,
they've put a lot into the camp,
they've been well behaved and we've
got a lot of positive comments back
from both the children and the par-
ents."
He said he's sure the kids learned
a lot too.
"It's been neat watching the kids
walk around, passing on to other
teammates what they've learned or,
when parents come in, them run-
ning over and telling the parent
what went on that day."
