Earning 487 points at the final swim meet of the sum- mer on Saturday in Seaforth, coach Julie Phillips says the team earned close to 100 more points than at last year's final meet. "I was surprised that we got so many points but all of our swimmers have really improved. A lot of their strokes have gotten so much better," she said Monday. While Seaforth has the largest swim team in the region with 52 swimmers, the team actually lost about eight swimmers compared to last year. Julie said the improvement in the swimmers' finishes can also be attributed to the fact that noon -hour lap swims were opened up to kids this year because of the large number of swim team mem- bers. Seaforth won each of the points. Three of the coaches, including Julie and Jenny Phillips and Megan Carnochan, will not be returning next year. "We're really sad - we're going to miss the swim team most of all," said Julie. She said lifeguards Ashley Marion, Andrea Murray and Matt Fisher could be taking over the swim team next year. Competing against 20 of the top golfers across the country, the 15=year-old held her lead on the final day. The three-day tourna- ment at Ingersoll from Aug. 13 to 15, was the final leg of the Canadian Optimist Junior Golf Zburnament, after playing qualifying tournaments at Woodlands Golf Course in Clinton and at the St. Mary's Golf and Country Club. Having won at Ingersoll, she now has the opportu- nity to play in the interna- tional tournament in Florida next July. Though she isn't sure if she will compete next summer, her 12 -year-old brother Paul played in Florida last year after having placed second in his division at Ingersoll. This year Paul finished fourth at Ingersoll, having moved up into the older division. Doig says if she goes to Florida it would be just for the experience. "You like to win, obviously, but I can't expect it," she says. Doig has played Ingersoll before, some- thing that may have helped her against golfers from Alberta. "I knew the course, and I knew the places I didn't want to be," she says. She was happy with her play in the first round, shooting a 77, while a golfer in her group shot more than 150. "It was hard to keep concentrated playing with her," she says. Doig was lading the Robyn Doig rounds. "That was crazy," she says. "I didn't play as well as I wanted to but I saw the other girls' scores, and I was first." Going into the third round she was playing in a group with girls seven strokes behind her so she watched their play closely to judge what she would have to do to finish the day in the same position. She says she was play- ing well but some shots got her into trouble. "So instead of pars, I'd make a double -bogey. "But they [the girls in her group] -were picking it up, so I thought, `I need to play better too." At the end of the tourna- ment she had a two-stroke lead after shooting rounds of 77, 85 and 84. Her mother, Linda, fol- lowed her around the course for the first two rounds. "It was really good hav- ing her there, she always says 'keep going.' "She nevers says nega- tive things, so she's been very supportive." She notes her apprecia- tion for her mom taking the whole day to watch her play. • On the last day of the tournament her father Cam accompanied her mother in the gallery. See D(G, rage 17 - a
