The 80th annual Huron County Plowing Match
saw 13 people come back to compete in the Paul
Bettles Memorial Class last Friday afternoon.
"We want to have fun with this class because
that's what Paul would have wanted," said
organizer George Townsend on. Friday.
Paul Bettles, of Brucefield, died last December
of a heart attack.
"Paul led the 4-H," said Townsend. "Pretty near
every one of these kids here today were led by
him. That's where we got the idea of them coming
back in his honour."
The memorial class was one of the special
features planned for this year's plowing match.
"The Bettles were more than gracious enough to
let us do this class in his honour. That was pretty
neat, I thought," he said.
Huron County plowers have won more than
$42,000 in scholarships since the early 80s, with
each scholarship of $2,500 going toward the
recipient's further education.
"Brian McGavin was one of the first ones," said
Townsend, speaking of one of the current 4-H
plowing leaders.
"I'm pretty proud today," said Townsend, noting
his three children Murray, Matt Townsend and
Charlene O'Reilly were participating in the
memorial class.
"I think it's the first time ever all of them have
plowed in the same class," he said.
Townsend said the other special feature went
well too.
