Seaforth soccer wraps up
without trip to playoffs

While Seaforth soccer teams didn't
make it to the play-offs this year,
coaches of both the U11 and U13
teams are happy with the progress
they saw this season.
"After a slow start this group of
boys and girls came together as a
team and finished the regular sched-
ule with a winning record," said U11
coach Don Bruxer, noting the team
came one win short of qualifying for
the playoffs in Clinton.
They won six games and lost four.
"The coaching staff would like to
say that it was a priviledge to be
involved with such. a committed
group of children and parents," he
said.
Seaforth's U13 coach John Taylor
says his team was a pleasure to
coach.
"They wanted to compete and
when they came to practice, they
really buckled down and worked at
stuff," he said.
Taylor says he saw a lot of growth
over the course of the season, noting
that because they were younger they
had to work together and become
more of a team.
"The soccer field is a huge surface
to cover," he said.
The team had a good season with
six wins, three losses and one tie,
but didn't get to the playoffs.
In their pool of teams during the
final tournament of the year, they
beat Lucknow 2-0 and lost 1-0 to
Clinton.
Because they didn't secure one
of the top two spots in their
pool, they didn't advance to the
finals.
Taylor says a lot of the teams they
faced had more 13 -year-olds than
they did, which put them at a disad-
vantage. The Seaforth team had a
large number of first year U13 play-
ers, though they had played soccer
before.
"We still competed with every
team," he says. "We were not over
our heads."
He thinks the same thing that
made them an underdog this year
will turn into an advantage next
year.
"We'll have all 13 -year-olds, more
or less," he says. "I was really
pleased with how we played this
year given the fact that we were
underdogs."
The U13 team had 20 players this
year, which Taylor says some coach-
es think is too many.
"I don't mind it," he says. "It makes
it easier to make substitutions."
He also says that a larger team
meant the team wasn't shorthanded
when players took
vacations with
their families.
