"We're one of the biggest, if not the biggest, sporting events in Huron County," said Chris Lee, whose family owns and operates the Walton Motocross grounds. "It only occurred to me last year to compare the TransCan to the Molson Indy in Zbronto. They draw a quarter -million people in a city of two million, roughly about 15 per cent of their population. "We draw 25,000 and if you scrape together the entire population of Huron County at about 50,000 that's 50 per cent in terms of rela- tive impact." The 2007 edition of the Walton TransCan national championships will take place on Aug. 16-19 and the Municipality of Huron East has declared Walton 'Moto Town' for the week, said Lee. With amateur, professsional and an east versus west `shoot out,' TransCan is three events in one. Riders from across Canada and the United States participate to be crowned the national champion of motocross. As the only amateur champi- onship in the country, "it's a one- shot, deal," said Lee, adding there are a total of 30 qualifying events. Divisions range from four and five- year -olds to 50 -plus, and include Scoreboard SHUFFLEBOARD Aug. 8 Ladies high: Ann Van Dooren 4 wins, June Martene 3 wins. In the MXlprofessional division, Walton represents the final round of a nine -race series. The pro MX1 championship is highlighted by the presentation of the King of Walton sword to the overall winner. The east -west competition fea- tures the MX2 champions from each side of the country, who wouldn't normally compete against each other, in a clash to establish region- al bragging rights. "But there's a lot more than just racing going on,"Lee added. Spectators have full access to racing pits, where fans can mingle with rac- ers and get auto - Summer hockey camp back in Seaforth From Page 12 evolves," adds Steffler. The celebrity game begins Friday at 6:30 p.m. with the silent auction going from 8 to 11 p.m. outside the arena in a tent. From 9-10 p.m. free public skating will be held after the game. Melady and Steffler say time for autographs with the celebrities will be scheduled at some point during the evening as well. Since 85-90 per cent of the kids enrolled in the camp are from Seaforth minor hockey, Melady says he's hoping the Shoot2Score camp will give multiple benefits to minor hockey. "It's a good way to get the rust off the blades and to be instructed by professional players with profession- al drills," he says. "It's great the camp is back in Seaforth. Parents have been telling me they're excited it's back because they've been going to other communi- ties for it," says Melady. Our Goal $213,283 Current Donations $116,000 graphs and posters. Walton also boasts the biggest off- road motorcycle trade show, live music, movies, freestyle and riding demonstrations, helicopter rides and more. The event has evolved into a cele- bration of Canadian motocross and offers a family experience for spec- tators and participants alike: Attendance has been an impressive 25,000 each year for the past few years, and an equally impressive 950 riders will participate. "Generally we try to rachet every- thing up a little bit, but there are no big leaps of change this year. The format we've been using seems to be successful. Starting on Monday, vendors have set up, with riders arriving and pre- liminary races in the days to follow. For more information call (519) 887-6735 or check out www.walton- transcan.ca.
